Getting to know Dr. Sarah Bench

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. I work with patients with anxiety, depression, school and work challenges, and people who want to better understand and work on their relationships. I hold a Ph.D in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University. I also completed the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program and Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the William Alanson White Institute. I have worked as a school psychologist in Independent Schools in New York City, and have been in private practice for over 20 years.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My treatment style is warm and collaborative. Many of my patients feel lonely, overwhelmed, or stuck, and in our work we will identify patterns of behavior that may be getting in your way, and work on creating a life that is designed by you and meaningful to you. My approach is an integrative and eclectic one, combining techniques and theories from both psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral approaches to treatment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Do you feel overwhelmed by feelings of sadness, anxiety, or dread? Do you feel tired a lot, or have difficulty getting through the day? If you can relate to these feelings, you are a lot like many of the people I work with, regardless of your age. Most of my clients come to therapy because they want to feel better. Perhaps like you, they are suffering from symptoms of anxiety and depression. Over the course of treatment, we will work together, and clients often move beyond symptom management and develop new ways of being and interacting with others, and enjoy more meaningful work and relationships.
