“Dr. Kailas’s empathy, deep presence, and holistic approach made me feel truly understood. She didn’t just help me manage my issues but throughout my healing journey she taught me to think more positively and break old mental patterns. I learned how to cultivate a sense of inner peace. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking support, even if you’re dealing with something as “simple” as occasional anxiety. What sets Dr Kailas apart is the way she teaches. Her thoughtful guidance sparked new interests for me and a deeper understanding of how mind, body, and spirit connect. She’s the kind of practitioner who leaves a lasting imprint on your life not only by treating your issues but by helping you grow into a better version of yourself.”

Getting to know Dr. Sudha Kailas

I work with highly sensitive, intuitive individuals, looking for clarity with their gifts. My patients are bright and intelligent: students, doctors, lawyers, bankers, and reverends, to name a few. My care is trauma-informed, meaning we move at your pace, with gentleness and curiosity. In our work together, you’ll find a space that is open, honest, and free of judgment. I will both challenge and support you, helping you build practical, lasting tools while nurturing your strengths and expanding your capacity to thrive. The foundation of health is mental wellness, and I guide individuals to recognize how their thoughts and actions may hold them back from feeling their best. Patients seek my care for support of anxiety, depression, and life's daily challenges, while others come to gain a richer understanding of how to live well. My approach is holistic, blending elements of cognitive behavioral therapy with a strong emphasis on somatics and mindfulness. In our work together, you'll find a space that is open, honest, and free of judgment. I will both challenge and support you in our collaboration. We will build practical, impactful skills while nurturing your strengths and ultimately expanding your innate capacity to thrive. I earned my Bachelor's degree from The University of Chicago, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and a PhD in Neuroscience from Tulane University School of Medicine. I completed residency in both Pediatrics and Psychiatry, along with a fellowship in Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Manhattan. I am available ONLINE in NY and NM, with in person availability in Santa Fe, NM.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My practice is built on a foundation of mutual respect and appreciation for all individuals. I honor your soul as a guiding force within your being. As a woman of East Indian descent, born to immigrant parents, cultural awareness is deeply woven into my approach. In our work together, I take great care to understand the influences that have shaped you: your upbringing, the role of religion and spirituality in your life, and the personal aspirations that guide your growth. I listen with intention, creating a space where your experiences are honored and your journey towards well-being is fully supported.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the first three sessions, I focus on understanding you and your health history in depth. When appropriate, I provide basic education and initial treatment guidance during this intake period. Your personalized treatment plan is developed once we’ve established a clearer picture of your needs and goals. Because healing is a fluid process and meaningful emotional work takes time, I encourage patients to commit to at least ten sessions. This initial period helps determine whether we’re a good fit for ongoing work together. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly or biweekly for best outcomes, with more frequent visits recommended during times of acute distress.

I highly recommend Dr. Kailas. She is well versed in both Eastern and Western methodologies. Dr. Kailas is brilliant, caring, extremely competent and so easy to talk to. My money was well spent! I admire Dr. Kailas and will continue to see her as needed. Dr. Kailas was a tremendous help to me!
Dr. Kailas has exceeded my therapeutic expectations, and our family is thankful to be working with her. I would strongly recommend hr to anyone looking for an alternative to strictly western mental health care.
This truth will sound dramatic. Dr. Kailas saved my teenage son's life. My son struggles with OCD and related anxiety and depression. We were in the black depths, three psychiatrists and thirteen medications down, when we met Dr. Kailas. "A malfunctioning brain is a starving brain." (paraphrasing); this was our new approach. She treated my son holistically, including nutrition and supplementation. This was the beginning of the recovery. He now takes no medication and is functioning like any other 17-year-old (only better, due to expanded insight and awareness). Dr. Kailas is kind, beyond knowledgeable, formidable, and so incredibly intelligent. My son regularly says, “Dr. K is the smartest person I have ever met.” Thank God for Dr. Kailas. We owe her an unfathomable debt of gratitude.
The doctor was very empathetic, and patient as I went through all my details; and I particularly admired her holistic approach to my problem, which normally is viewed only at the physical plane.
I have been meeting with Dr. Sudha Kailas for several years. Her wisdom, knowledge, kindness and holistic approach have been life changing for me. Her professional manner is a mark of her trustworthy character. I have recommended her psychiatric care to many others and I will continue to do so in the future.
