“I have been seeing Dr. Chen for ~3 years and she is hands-down the best therapist I've ever had. She is very empathic, patient , knowledgeable, well-prepared, and communicative, and has equipped me with coping strategies that I use often in my day to day. She will conduct research outside of our sessions to provide additional information and support as needed, and she always responds promptly to messages. I never feel judged or that I need to remind Dr. Chen of prior events or discussions -- she comes to each appointment prepared and is flexible to allow me to discuss whatever is most pressing. I know patient-therapist fit is crucial and I'm grateful that I've found Dr. Chen because she has been a perfect fit for my needs. ”

Getting to know Dr. Suzanna Chen

At my private practice, I am an out-of-network psychiatrist and do not participate in insurance plans. You are responsible for the full session fee at the time of the appointment. You deserve the best psychiatrist/therapist for you and your needs. I believe a good fit is extremely important in this selection. To help with that choice, I provide an online pre-screen form (on my website) and a complimentary 15-minute phone pre-screen consultation prior to booking an appointment, so we can both determine if this is a good fit for your individual needs. The pre-screen must be completed before the appointment can be confirmed. MY PRACTICE: I am a Board-Certified M.D. psychiatrist with a Doctor of Medicine degree from Mercer University, Savannah. I completed my residency in Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, Montefiore Medical Center - Moses Division Hospital. I run a private boutique practice in NYC. My specialties are psychodynamic and CBT psychotherapy. Through a holistic approach, I also incorporate lifestyle changes. I can provide medication management to supplement psychotherapy only IF and WHEN it is appropriate or medically necessary. I don't push medications and take a mindful and collaborative approach. I offer 45-60 minute appointments to allow enough time to thoroughly discuss options and answer questions. *Currently doing video appointments only, and only while you are located in New York State during the appointment. *Your appointment will not be fully confirmed until the pre-screen process is completed. *I require that the prospective client books the appointment personally; I do not take bookings on behalf of friends or family. If family or friends would like to be involved, I am happy to hear collateral from them if I accept the person as a patient. *I don't usually prescribe at the first appointment, and I don't prescribe controlled medications.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with motivated and ambitious patients (20s to 40s) on a journey of discovery and self-improvement. I have a special interest in building confidence, reducing anxiety, improving work-life balance, addressing people-pleasing, supporting high-achieving professionals in their goals, healing emotional wounds from narcissistic parents, maneuvering relationships (including interracial and intercultural relationships), and navigating culture and identity. I also have further training in perinatal mental health from PSI and specialize in women's mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I tend to provide therapy that is an individually tailored mix of psychodynamic and CBT together since I want to address current obstacles while also trying to change unhelpful long term patterns. I can also focus on one or the other. I want to make sure that what I am doing is helpful, thus I tailor it both to the goals or obstacles presented and to personal preferences of my clients. I can also provide medication management to supplement psychotherapy only IF and WHEN it is appropriate or medically necessary. I don't push medications and take on a mindful and collaborative approach. The initial full consultation session will include exploration of your concerns, your history, your questions and any goals that you may have. You don’t have to have any specific goals in order to start since that can be part of our exploration together. During this we can also both get a sense of fit. Since the first appointment is only a consultation, at the end of the consultation you can decide whether you would like to continue or not. Since I find that fit it is very important, before the consultation appointment I also pre-screen through a pre-screen online form and provide a 15 minute complimentary pre-screen call.
