Getting to know Dr. Theodore Wasik

Good mental health, well-being and a sense we are living the life we want are things many of us strive for, but may find it difficult to attain. When it comes to achieving these goals, anxiety, depression, and other psychological woes can often prevent that from happening. These other woes may include a poor sense of what you want, who you are, what you are feeling and thinking, or self-defeating behaviors that you can’t seem to prevent or control. In my practice, we will strive together to overcome these obstacles, so we can clear a path to help you discover and better understand the feelings and thoughts that are personally and individually yours. This is the work of self-understanding that is vital to good mental health and well-being and permits us to live more fully the life we want—to be closer to the ones we love and care about the most, whether friends or partners; to seek work that is fulfilling and personally meaningful and helps support the ones we love; and to be able to set work aside and disengage from the demands of the world and find pleasure in doing so. If you feel that some of these words speak to you, consider making an appointment to talk about it, and we will see if we can get you back on track. I was drawn to the field of psychiatry and psychotherapy because of my interest in the human mind, and the desire to help those in psychological distress. These interests led me to pursue undergraduate studies in psychology and biology, graduate study in neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, medical and psychiatric training at the Temple University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Virginia, and training in psychoanalysis at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (BPSI). Currently, I have a private practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Lexington MA where I see patients age 18 and over who are seeking therapy, medication management, or a combination of both.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice what is called psychodynamic psychotherapy, where the governing principle in any session is to explore as fully as possible what is on your mind. Some parts of your life, past or present, may be harder to talk about than others, so it becomes important for you and I to join together to overcome these obstacles to exploration, to try and clear a path to help you discover and better understand the feelings and thoughts that are personally and individually yours. This is the work of self-understanding that is vital to good mental health and well-being, and permits us to live more fully the life we want—to be closer to the ones we love and care about the most, whether friends or partners; to seek work that is fulfilling and personally meaningful and helps support the ones we love; and to be able to set work aside and disengage from the demands of the world and find pleasure in doing so. Another avenue of treatment I offer as a psychiatrist are the psychiatric medicines. These medicines classically help control symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood instability, disruptive emotional outbursts, and other maladies. Psychopharmacology is the technical term for this form of treatment and it can be strikingly helpful for some. In some instances it is the sole form of treatment, but in my practice it is more common to combine meds with therapy because research has shown that the combination of the two produces the most optimal result. Just to be clear, medication isn't always combined with therapy--there are plenty of instances where I see patients for therapy without meds. Lastly, there is psychoanalysis for those interested in a more intensive form of therapy that attempts to understand the unconscious mind, in addition to the conscious mind.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In session I listen closely and attentively to the patient and try to help them explore their mental distress. Over time the patient’s trust in me leads to an alliance that enables me to help them understand the source of their problems. This insight enables patients to change their behavior and lead a better life overall. Rooted in conversation, therapy is the process of talking with a mental health professional to obtain relief from mental distress. It is true that many people are often nervous about trying therapy, with some seeing it as a sign of weakness to need a professional’s help during a particularly trying time in their life. Also, it might seem a bit daunting to reach out to someone you don’t know to talk about what’s on your mind. At certain times in one’s life, though, giving therapy a chance can be the right thing to do, leading to a rewarding understanding of one’s problems and an opportunity to move beyond them. For most, just talking about one’s troubles to a qualified professional who listens closely and attentively can lead to an immediate sense of relief. The most common complaints I hear from patients are depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues, like self-doubt and self-criticism. Others may also find it difficult to resist certain impulses, or feel compelled to engage in self-defeating behaviors that they can’t seem to prevent or control. There may be intrusive, unwanted thoughts that are frightening, often coupled with compulsions of checking, frequent washing of the hands, or other repetitive rituals. Whatever the problem may be, whether the focus be therapy or med management, I am working hard to diagnose and empathize in regard to the psychological symptoms and suffering that someone is experiencing.

I am an out-of-network provider, which means I only accept payment directly. Dr. Wasik prescribed medication for me, then when I called for a refill he denied writing me a prescription and insinuated that I was drug-seeking.
Dr. Wasik was great at providing multiple options for my continued treatment. He also does a good job of listening to your concerns and helping you build a plan to address them.
Dr. Wasik is an excellent psychiatrist that I highly recommend. I have seen him over the course of the last year and he's been able to help me in direct and meaningful ways. His personality and bedside manner make you feel immediately comfortable, and his depth of experience in psychoanalysis and talk therapy make you feel like you're in the right hands. It's hard to find a psychiatrist with the right mix of empathy and professionalism, and I'm glad I was able to find both with Dr. Wasik.
Dr. Wasik is an excellent doctor. He is kind, thoughtful and relatable. He makes therapy enjoyable and productive. There's nothing that I don't feel comfortable talking to him about which is liberating and something that I have been striving to find for some time.
Dr. Wasik was the first long-term therapist I've seen. I only stopped because my insurance changed. As someone who went through life not ever thinking he'd need a therapist, in one year, Dr. Wasik has helped me make significant changes in my life. I look forward to continuing my journey in therapy and continuing to improve the quality of my life. Dr. Wasik has been an important part of helping me make the first steps.
Dr Wasik is a excellent and professional psychiatrist and physician. He uses time tested techniques and knows when to guide but does not lead. His excellent work brought me out of a deep depression and assisted in improving many other areas in my life. My anxiety which was out of control when I before I began working with Dr Wasik, is now under control and I will be off all medications within a few weeks. I would highly recommend Dr Wasik to anyone looking to make improvements in your mental well being.
He was kind and knowledgeable but disorganized. Generally speaking you want some kind of continuity between sessions and he didn't seem to ever refer to notes from previous sessions, so they were often disjointed and didn't result in cumulative progress.
    Great start!
Dr. Theodore Wasik was very professional and extremely helpful. His office was comfortable and his place was easy to find, easy parking, in a beautiful neighborhood.
I've been seeing him for about 4 - 6 months at this point. I know the definition of a good therapist depends on the patient but for me, where I was new and uncomfortable to therapy, he was patient and I feel I've made great progress. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait (usually no more than 15 minutes) when previous appointments run long but seeing that I benefit from it frequently when he lets our sessions run over rather than cutting me off during insightful moments, I don't mind. Sometimes I also have to repeat details previously talked about but I also find that ok, given the time gap between our sessions and him seeing many patients. All in all, I've had a great experience working with Dr Wasik.
I saw him a few times and he was always very scattered and disorganized. He kept forgetting what we had talked about previously and would sit for 10 minutes reading notes from our past session.
The doctor would have problems staying awake on more than one occasion during my visit, and he always appeared focused on his wallet than my service. i would not recommend Dr Wasik
I first started working with DR. Wasik a year ago when I was having very bad side affects to my Anti-depressant prescribed by my PCP. Within an hour of me contacting him he responded and asked a series of questions and set up an appointment. I have seen a few very good psychiatrists in the past but he is by far the best. He allows me the space to work thru my emotions and thoughts but remains present enough to interject when needed or asked. My health insurance recently changed and his practice did not take my new insurance. I have been so positively impacted by seeing him I decided to pay my insurance out of pocket in order to continue my work with him. I am usually a very critical person but I would without question recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Wasik is a wonderful psychiatrist. He has helped me immensely, he gives great feedback and challenges my thought process. I would highly recommend him.
Dr. Wasik is an excellent clinician. He is on time, organized and able to accomplish alot in a short time through the use of expert therapeutic skills. It is a pleasure to go to his appointments. He is also a nice person who relates well to his clients. He has an interactive style which is probably wished for by most clients but not always accomplishable. Appointment time with Dr. Wasik is well spent.
Dr. Wasik is very professional and highly practical. He's a good listener and he knows how to make individualized recommendations based on your situation.
