Some function well outwardly while struggling privately; others contend with more severe disturbances of emotional stability. I am a board-certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, but my practice is devoted entirely to psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. We begin with what is most pressing and go from there. I listen carefully to your thoughts, feelings, and dreams—and for the emotional life they carry. Over time, we work together to bring order and meaning to what has been confusing, painful, frightening, or difficult to bear. The immediate wish is to feel better, of course. As symptoms ease and the process takes hold, related questions often emerge: how one lives and loves, what one makes of experience, and who one is becoming. The work can be demanding, surprising, sometimes quite funny, and deeply absorbing. At its best, it has the seriousness—and freedom—of play.
