Getting to know Dr. Yaacov Wenick
Good to meet you! I practice at Refuah Health Center where I am the principal clinical psychologist. Previously, I was the clinical director of a NYC housing program with over 250 adults with serious mental illness. I completed my doctoral internship at Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric emergency room and inpatient units. I worked with patients and their families in their most vulnerable moments. My earlier training at state psychiatric hospitals on Long Island and at LIJ’s Zucker Hillside Hospital, provided me with additional insight into acute psychiatric care, crisis stabilization, and long-term recovery.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Throughout treatment, I draw from evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT, as well as psychodynamic therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS). With this approach, patients gain the emotional self-awareness necessary to create meaningful and lasting change. Therapy with Dr. YY Wenick is a collaborative journey—one where your story, strengths, and goals guide our work. The therapeutic space is always non-judgmental, allowing client’s growth, healing and agency over their lives.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My practice and training have shaped my understanding of what real support looks like — particularly when the system feels overwhelming. I specialize in working with high-risk clients, individuals with personality disorders and people with complex mental health histories including psychiatric hospitalization. Many of my patients come in feeling misunderstood and exhausted from the cycles of hospitalization and failed attempts at therapy.
