About Dr. James Cheng
Dr. James Cheng grew up in Silicon Valley in Northern California. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was a Regents Scholar and graduated summa cum laude. He remained at UCLA to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, receiving multiple scholarships, including the Dean's Scholarship and the David and Miki Lee Scholarship. During dental school, Dr. Cheng served as President of the Periodontics Study Club and Vice President of the Chinese Dental Student Association.
Following dental school, Dr. Cheng completed specialty training in Periodontics at UCLA, where he served as Chief Resident. During his residency, he was actively involved in research focused on implant surface technology, osseointegration, biomaterials, and periodontal regeneration. His work has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and national presentations, including research on implant surface modifications, osteoblast behavior, and aging-associated periodontal disease. He also authored a review on aging-associated periodontitis published in Periodontology 2000.
Dr. Cheng has received multiple research awards, including recognition from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and UCLA's Division of Regenerative and Reconstructive Sciences for his contributions to implantology and regenerative dentistry. He remains committed to advancing the field of periodontology through clinical excellence, research, education, and mentorship.
