“The doctor is very level-headed and empathetic, which suits my personality just fine. He’s smart and was able to answer all my questions thoroughly (which, admittedly, were numerous…. I have an engineer’s brain!). Never done Telepsych, but besides the technology issues (see below), I loved the convenience and lack of waiting. However, the Bluesky telepsych registration was completely messed up, and I almost gave up when it took me ~10 tries over two hours. Not sure if it’s just me, but the site kept freezing and forcing me to come back in.”

Getting to know Dr. Adam Fijtman

I’m a board-certified psychiatrist with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and I take a patient-focused approach to care. My goal is always to understand your unique experience so we can work together to improve your quality of life through thoughtful, individualized treatment. I have experience managing medications for a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and adjustment disorder. I also support patients who are navigating trauma—past or present—as well as those experiencing major life transitions. I completed my psychiatry residency at Duke University in North Carolina, where I gained broad clinical experience across diverse populations and complex cases. I'm fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and I strive to make sure language is never a barrier to receiving quality mental health care. In our sessions, I’ll take the time to get to know you—not just your symptoms, but your story and your goals. Together, we’ll build a treatment plan that aligns with your values and helps you move toward a healthier, more fulfilled version of yourself.

What should a new client know about working with you?

First and foremost, I want you to know that you're entering a space where you will be heard, respected, and supported. I understand that seeking psychiatric care can feel like a big step, and my goal is to make that process as comfortable and collaborative as possible. My approach is patient-centered, which means I focus on your unique story, your needs, and your goals—not just your symptoms. I take the time to get to know who you are as a whole person so we can build a treatment plan that fits your life, whether that includes medication management, supportive therapy, or both. You don’t need to have everything figured out when we start. What matters most is that you're open to working together—and I’ll be with you every step of the way as we move toward improving your mental health and overall well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with truly getting to know you. In our first session, I’ll conduct a comprehensive evaluation to understand your current concerns, medical and mental health history, life circumstances, and goals for treatment. This initial conversation helps me see the full picture and tailor care to your unique needs. From there, we’ll work together to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication management, supportive therapy, lifestyle recommendations, or a combination of approaches. I aim to provide guidance while also respecting your preferences and values—your voice is central in every decision we make. As we move forward, I monitor your progress closely and make adjustments as needed. I view treatment as a collaborative process built on open communication, trust, and mutual respect. My goal is to support you not only in managing symptoms, but in building a healthier, more fulfilling life.
