Getting to know Dr. Adam Knowles

As the former medical director of a large outpatient psychiatry clinic, I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to my work with each of my patients. I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and ADHD with medication management. Just as important as my pharmacological expertise, my philosophy is to treat patients with the kindness, respect, and dignity they deserve and good outcomes will soon follow. I received my M.D. from New York Medical College. I then attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center for residency training in psychiatry. There, I served as the chief resident of Bronx Psychiatric Center, an intermediate-term inpatient psychiatric hospital for those with severe mental illness. Shortly following residency, I became board certified in psychiatry under the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. After residency, I joined the faculty in Montefiore's Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. During my 8 years at Montefiore, I worked on the acute inpatient unit followed by the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Division (AOPD). While in the AOPD, I served as the Medical Director, overseeing an outpatient clinic comprised of 60 staff members and 1,700 patients. I have significant experience working with patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and other psychotic disorders, which helped me earn the position of Program Director of OnTrackNY, a first-episode psychosis program. I also have extensive experience treating depressive, anxiety, bipolar, and attention-deficit disorders. I am an assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the medical school for Montefiore Medical Center. I have served as chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee, Program Education Committee, Steering Committee, Program Leaders Committee, and Adult Residency Training Executive Committee within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist with years of experience helping patients with a variety of mental health issues. I offer comprehensive, high quality care to each of my patients, and I have a special focus on helping them to identify and manage their own mental health needs. I have a unique blend of compassion and experience that makes me a trusted resource for those seeking help with mental health issues. I take a holistic approach to care, and strive to help my patients develop the tools they need to achieve mental wellbeing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial evaluation is generally 45 to 60 minutes long and will review your complete psychiatric history. From there, we can start to plan your medication strategy and appointment frequency to best address your issues. Follow-up appointments are usually 15 to 30 minutes long, can be in-person or virtual (on the phone or over video), and will cover symptom progress, medication effects, potential safety issues, and planning your next steps.
