Getting to know Dr. Akash Jaggi

I have experience treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, ADHD, disruptive and impulse control disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, gender dysphoria, PTSD, psychosis, sleep, and substance use disorders. I have worked in multiple levels of care and treatment settings, including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, emergency rooms, and state correctional and institutional settings. Currently, I serve as an attending psychiatrist at several hospitals throughout the Bay and Central Coast area. I prescribe evidence-based treatments and take a personalized approach to recommending medications, carefully considering the risks and side effects. In psychotherapy, I strive to remain accepting, non-judgmental, and empathic to build rapport with my clients. I am interested in how psychotherapy can leverage a person's strengths and inner resources to help them achieve their treatment goals or gain insight into themselves. I aim to provide trauma-informed care and understand the importance of creating a safe space where patients can confidentially explore difficult experiences. In my view, the ultimate goal of psychotherapy is to help individuals enhance their sense of meaning in life, cultivate a healthy lifestyle, foster positive relationships, and develop effective coping strategies for everyday stressors. I personally practice mindfulness and try to incorporate it into therapeutic work. I collaborate closely with patients' therapists and other physicians to promote overall wellbeing. While I strive to remain available for patients during moments of crisis, I will recommend higher levels of care if symptoms cannot be adequately managed in the outpatient setting. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine - Academic Campus, completed my residency in Psychiatry at the University of Central Florida, and pursued a fellowship in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

- Overall, I formulate the diagnoses and treatment of psychiatric illnesses according to the bio-psycho-social model and the "perspectives of psychiatry" approach that was devised at Johns Hopkins. - I am very fascinated by the workings of the brain and the mind, and I'm a believer in the advancements in neuroscience that continue to lead to progress in the treatment of mental illnesses. I believe that the biomedical approach helps to lessen the stigma surrounding mental health and provides a more accurate view of mental illness. Thus, I prescribe medications, and I offer neuromodulation and interventional treatments that have been developed based on research into the brain-based mechanisms of mental illness. - I offer psychometric tests that help diagnose conditions like ADHD, and use measurement based care to help keep track of patients' progress in treatment. - Depending on the individual needs of the person, I offer different therapies such as: brief or long term psychodynamic therapy that helps people break free from neurotic behaviors, cognitive-behavioral therapies, and mindfulness based therapies like ACT and MBSR. - In my view, mindfulness practices help to disengage with one's mental chatter, inner distraction (sometimes called "the monkey mind") or entrenched narratives of self, and to open up a space to be in the moment. The research on mindfulness demonstrates how this practice promotes greater brain health, improves emotional processing and regulation, and re-trains the attentional circuits in the brain that are drained by modern technology, social media, and the influx of data and information that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session will be a detailed history taking session which includes medical, surgical history, history of prior treatments, current medications, a discussion of the background and life story of the patient, and the present symptoms which resulted in the patient seeking care. Finally we will discuss a treatment plan including medications and psychotherapy when needed. I like to incorporate some psychoeducation on diagnoses and treatment into the session.

Great listener, and curious about patient’s situation
Horrible office! We booked our appt many weeks ago. On the appointment day I had to call the office and ask where I can find the link to the appointment because it was a virtual appointment. The receptionist told me the doctor will send it a few minutes before the 6pm appointment. I waited and waited and called multiple times as the appointment time reached and still there was no link. The receptionist assured me the doctor was running behind on patients and it would be sent. At around 6:55 pm almost an hour past our appointment time the receptionist finally calls me and says our appointment was canceled back in September almost a month ago claiming they have reached out to us multiple times since. I was receiving reminders for my appointment even the day before and never received any cancellation or any communication from the office. The way the receptionist handled the situation was extremely unprofessional and unkind for such a sensitive appointment. Would not recommend.

I found our time together gave us the chance to truly get to know one another and discuss the reason for my seeking out the help I needed and I am very satisfied and enthused about both the website and my doctor! Thank you for both this website and my wonderful doctor! I have led a particular way of life and he has led quite another and we were able to discuss this and many other things candidly! I look forward to our next visit!

The best thing about Dr Jaggi is he is accessible. I've probably sent 25 emails to their intake mailbox and phoned and texted Dr Jaggi directly and he is very good about responding. He also has seriously deep knowledge and experience. It's only the beginning of my Son's time working with him, but I feel good he will have Dr Jaggi to provide guidance as long as he is in the Bay Area.
Easy to talk to, he was able to address my concerns and questions, see you later his request for healthy mind apps has really me help me get back to stability. And developing calm inner peace
