Dr. Akshay Lohitsa is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine and after years as an Attending Physician in Psychiatry is now Voluntary Faculty.
Dr. Akshay Lohitsa graduated from Harvard College with a B.A. in Biology, focusing his research on translational neuroscience and teaching review courses at the Harvard Bureau of Study Council. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he was awarded for his professionalism and humanism. He completed his psychiatry residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center as well as a psychoanalytic fellowship at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
During his training, Dr. Lohitsa won the American Psychiatric Association's Mind Games competition, was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, and served on the Housestaff Quality Council. He has contributed to multiple book chapters, has presented at national conferences and has been awarded by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He lectures to OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, and Psychiatry residency programs at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He has advanced coursework in the History of Psychiatry, has studied at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience in India, and has helped develop a sustainable free clinic in Quito in conjunction with the Ecuadorian Health Ministry.
In addition to maintaining a private practice, he is the director of the Weill Cornell Community Clinic which offers integrated and free services to the uninsured.

My case is pretty heavy and complicated, and trusting Dr Lohitsa was the best decision I made. On the first day of medication he prescribed, my brain already feels better. Hope this is the beginning of only positive changes in my healing process. Dr Lohitsa is amazing!

Lohitsa has a very natural, genuine person approach. He is one of the few psychiatrists that shake your hand and give you a warm smile. Our conversation flowed easily and I felt very listened to and supported.

I have been treating my illness since 2009 and have seen a number of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurse Practitioners and variations of mental health professionals...
Not. one. has come close to being able to really treat my illness the way Dr. Lohitsa has. When I met Dr. L, I was at an all-time low and had been off medication for months. He brought me back to life in a matter of weeks...a problem that in the past would have taken me months and months of work to reach, he was able to understand and treat in a matter of weeks (with a lot of hard work that we did together!). In my mind there is no one better in the biz than Dr. Lohitsa.
He sees you as a whole person- beyond your illness. He is invested in your success, your health and happiness and I will never forget the way he looked at me in the emergency room at xyz hospital- not as the grey shell of a human being that was helpless and sick, but as a real person in need of help.

I have been seeing Dr. Lohitsa for 3 years now and he handles every session professionally. He always remembers small details and is attentive. He is a great listener as well as provides good advice and treatment. He makes himself available if needed for emergencies and goes above and beyond. I plan to continue to see him for the foreseeable future.

After struggling with severe migraine headaches for years and being misdiagnosed time and time again by other doctors such as my PHC or a couple neurologists, I was recommended to Dr. Lohitsa. Upon meeting him for our first visit- I immediately felt that I was in the right hands, I mean within the first fifteen minutes or so of conversation.... I felt like for the first time after seeing quite a few other doctors that someone was actually listening and was responding to my situation as an individual situation rather than just asking generic questions and giving generic advise. He nailed it on our first visit and I now live a better life everyday for it. After about a month from our first visit I followed but by sending him a text message saying that I felt like a better husband, father and friend. He changed my life. As it turns out- the headaches stemmed from depression / anxiety which I no longer struggle with. Absolutely transformative...

Upon first meeting Dr. Lohitsa it’s immediately clear that he’s equally intelligent and empathetic. Dr. Lohitsa is a skilled listener and a trustworthy confidant. He is sincere in his care for his patients. I initially came to Dr. Lohitsa for postpartum depression after the birth of my son and his care for me and my family during that period was exceptional. He has remained my regular therapist. Dr. Lohitsa has a deep understanding of the patient as a whole. I could not recommend him more highly.
