Getting to know Dr. Amita Jha

(Accepts UHC, Cigna, BCBS, and Aetna) Our board-certified psychiatrist, advanced nurse practitioners, and physician assistants offer mostly remote, with some in-person services. We provide a full range of psychiatric medication management with supportive therapy, as well as newer treatment options such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and nasal ketamine (Spravato) at our clinic location in the Chevy Chase area, Maryland. Once you make an appointment through Zocdoc or our website, our staff will contact you promptly to complete the paperwork required before your first appointment. We request that, once you make an appointment, please keep it, as last-minute cancellations drain our limited resources. Our office manager Jennifer, or TMS and ketamine technician Nicole, will reach out to you within 24 hours for more information and to schedule appointments as needed for TMS treatment. We use the deep TMS Brainsway machine for indications including anxiety, depression, OCD, and smoking cessation. Dr. Amita Jha, who completed her medical degree at Lady Hardinge Medical College and residency in psychiatry at Boston University, accepts United Healthcare, GEHA, Aetna, BCBS, CareFirst, Anthem/Blue Cross, and federal insurance plans.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you make a zoc doc appointment- you may be seen by an advanced nurseSince we accept insurances- Cigna/ UHC/BCBS/Aetna, we encourage clients to find out about their mental health benefits and deductibles, so there are no surprises in the billing and reimbursements later on. We expect all our clients to keep an active credit card in our system so we can charge the co pays once the appointment is completed. TMS and Ketamine require prior authorizations which may take up to 2 weeks. We do our best to get the treatments authorized.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Once we have authorization from the insurance company for your treatment, we schedule your first appointment for one hour. This visit we do brain mapping to locate the best area of brain for you for deep brain stimulation. TMS treatment needs a commitment of time as it is delivered in a series of 30- 36 daily treatments 6-8 weeks. Most of the SEs are mild- some minor headache and jaw tension are common side effects. Otherwise it is very safe treatment for people who don't respond well to medications. Our offices centrally located in Bethesda , comfortable and spacious.

This was my first appointment with Dr. Jha, and since this is during the time of the shelter in place order due to coronavirus, we did a Telemedicine appointment. I felt heard and understood. I mentioned a lot of different things that were bothering me, and Dr. Jha was very good at parsing through them to identify things that are facts of life, difficulties I have managed on my own, and issues that can be best treated with medication - she took the time to understand small pieces of what I was saying and did not make a blanket diagnoses. I felt accepted and validated, too. Wonderful doctor. I hope that with her and my therapist's help, I'll continue getting better.
Dr. Jha changed my life! After battling depression for way too long and not finding a psychiatrist who understood me (and took my insurance), I found Dr. Jha on ZocDoc. I was even able to make a Saturday appointment to meet with her! I am 100% better since finding Dr. Jha. I can't thank her enough for helping me get to the happy/satisfied life that I always wanted but never thought I could have. Everyone should feel this good.
For context, I have a feeling that my experience was partially because this was an evening appointment that she is not usually scheduled for. However, in my opinion that doesn't excuse how I was treated. My hour long appointment was only a half hour, and this was mainly because Dr. Jha would cut me off while I was answering questions in order to ask me a new one, rushed through talking about very sensitive topics that are the reason I'm seeking treatment in the first place, and generally badgered me into answering questions that I feel should have been approached more delicately. She did not seem compassionate, rarely looked up from her laptop at me, and also clearly didn't review the notes taken at the preliminary appointment to prepare for seeing me. I was very uncomfortable, which if she noticed, she didn't address. I have no interest in continuing to talk to her, because the entire time it felt like she was just in a rush to get home. Also, after having to have a preliminary appointment just to see Dr. Jha in the first place, she lets me know that I'm going to continue to see someone else at the practice that isn't her-the person I had the preliminary appointment with! So what was the point of seeing her?? In the end I just felt like I had wasted my time and did not at all feel supported.
Met with Carol Smith and I’m so glad I decided to give this practice a try. I immediately felt comfortable, and Carol is so personable and friendly! Honestly, she makes it effortless. Carol is knowledgeable, breaks everything down so you can understand, and definitely listens and doesn’t rush you. I always look forward to my appointments, and I’m so glad I found her.
Dr. Jha is an excellent psychiatrist. Her insightful analysis shows what a precise Doctor she is, really taking her time to gather all relevant information on her patients and their histories. Dr. Jha is very careful in selecting exactly the right medication combination. That may sound like a given, but I’ve had a bad experience in the past where a psychiatrist prescribed meds indiscriminately and changed the dosage without a second thought. Dr. Jha is the exact opposite - she will tailor your medication(s) very carefully to adjust to your specific needs. She actually engages you in conversation to determine the root of what is causing any particular issue. Rest assured, you can trust Dr. Jha to have your best interest at heart. There are some competent psychiatrists in the Metro Area, but Dr. Jha goes above-and-beyond. I am thankful for how tailored her approach is to my history and situation.
She was the first psychiatrist who took time to listen to me, learn my story and start a productive conversations about my treatment. I’m so impressed! Highly recommend!
I like it here a lot. Had a hard time finding a psychiatrist that actually "gets" me. Dr. Jha is so nice and helpful. Willing to listen and not just push meds for various conditions. I like the lady at the front desk! She's quiet but I never saw her as rude, as I noticed some other reviews said. Anyway, I def recommend Dr. Jha's office. :)

Very relaxed office
Great initial meeting!
Today was my first visit. I had many psychiatrists over the years and this has been the best doctor visit I have ever had. To the point that I have opened up to talk about my life like I had never before. I even cried! Yes, that’s right and I hadn’t cried in months! I first met with Dr. JhA’s physician assistant, Carol who was born to do this job. She put me at ease, made me feel welcomed, comfortable and was interested to listen to my issues and challenges of everyday life. She was patient, understanding and non-judgmental. I then spent some time with Dr. Jha who showed concern and caring attitude to me. She too made me feel important which allowed me to speak openly and freely. In total, the visit lasted almost 75minutes! no one was rushing which is unheard of! This today’s visit gave me hope that there is still a chance for me to be a healthy, happy functioning human being. I left the office with a new therapy plan in my hand, glad that I found this place. I am already coming back next week for a follow up.

She is patient and thorough and very compassionate. I came to her in the midst of a deep depression and she adjusted my medication and helped me find a therapist. She is very encouraging and kind and extremely professional. She has been of great assistance and I'm grateful to have found her.
The physician seemed a bit stressed and crunched for time when I saw her. She came off as a bit harsh, but direct. That is not necessarily a bad thing. I was a bit tongue tied. Next time, I'm going to write down my medical history and what the appointment is for that way we aren't running around in circles.
Dr. Jha is a wonderful, caring, and supportive psychiatrist with a true passion for he work. Unlike many psychiatrists, Dr. Jha does more than just prescribe medication, she provides extremely valuable feedback and insights into any issues or problems that you address with her. Dr. Jha is the best psychiatrist I have had the opportunity to work with and I look forward to continue working with her.
The receptionist is the crankiest person I've ever met, even when treated with respect and warmth. I was not impressed with Dr. Jha, but decided that since I have my illness under control and don't need an emotionally supportive doctor at this point in my life, I would continue to see her. However, when I needed a refill on my prescription it took over 2 weeks to hear back from her office!! By the time they returned my numerous voicemail's, I had already switched doctors. Very unsatisfactory.
First of all, the receptionist was abrupt and rude. While she said she was well versed in insurance policies, she tried to get me to pay a deductible that had already been met. I had to call the insurance company myself and check. Then, I finally met Dr. Jha and while she was amiable at first, she became confrontational. I wouldn’t recommend Dr. Jha, she has a rough bedside manner and the receptionist was a nightmare.

I went to see Dr. Jha about my issues with anxiety and low self esteem. She gave me dieting advice and was extremely interested in the fact that my partner is trans. I was not comfortable talking to her; she made me feel absurd and alienated.

Dr. Jha helped and continues to help cure me of depression, among other mental illnesses I have struggled with my entire life. At my first appointment with her, she knew exactly what questions to ask to get to the root of my problems, and prescribed medications I needed to get me through the next month. I could tell she has a sense of empathy, and truly listened to my struggles. As I improve, with each meeting, I can tell my new-found happiness makes her happy as well. I would recommend Dr. Jha to anyone in need of help, and I will continue to meet with her as my progress improves.
She listened, asked the perfect questions to got to the heart of the issues and she delivers brilliant nuggets of wisdom! I will be back!

The doctor was very professional, asked alot of questions, listened to what I had to say, came up with a treatment plan with me. Also, she allayed my concerns about some of the medication that I was prescribed. Overall, I would rate her highly.
The scheduling was easy and the check-in was relatively fast because I was able to fill out the new patient documents online ahead of time. I waited 10 minutes past my appointment time, but Dr. Jha was thorough, caring and professional.
She didn't just rush me thru the appt. She took her time and ask me question after question, she allowed me time to ramble on and on like i usually do lol and she seemed like she was truly interested in everything i was saying. She was really trying to get to the root of the issue. At the end of the appt, she thoroughly explained her diagnosis and how she would treat it. I left the office not feeling rushed and feeling as if every question I had was answered. Most of all, I left feeling hopeful and like I am in good hands. Highly recommended!
I left my first and last appointment with Dr. Amita pretty disappointed. I was trying to get adderall prescribed for my ADD but she basically assumed I was just trying to get high and essentially told me to get out. I'm offended, and I wished she'd taken the time to better understand my situation and try to help me (I would have taken other medications and reccomendstions to heart as well). While she wasn't terrible and she was professional, I wouldn't recommend her.
Very disappointed. Kept saying "you people" when referring to me, a substance abuser. If you are on a journey to feeling better, this doctor is a HURDLE. There are plenty of other better options. Good luck
Dr. Jha was very easy to talk to and asked helpful questions. It was my first appointment there but I would go back to see her again.
Dr. Jha was polite and understanding, as well as very thorough. She explained both the intended and side effects of the medication and made sure I understood and agreed to them.
It was amazing she's very understanding
Dr. Jha was very professional and paid close attention to my concerns during my intake session. She recommended both a prescription and possible talk therapy to help me with my health goals; it seemed like she wanted to provide me with multiple options to get better as quickly as possible. Other reviewers seem to have taken issue with her demeanor, but it was just what I was looking for. If you want cuddles and cookies, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you want a professional clinical psych exam, I was pleased with my experience.
I thought Dr.Jha was excellent, I was seen right away and she took the time to understand my situation and background before initiating the conversation. Excellent bedside manner and very welcoming the whole way through.
She is great at identifying your issues, but can be a little harsh. She has really helped me with my problems, because she has helped me face the reality of the situation and deal with the issues head on. She is also very insightful, but for someone who needs hand holding I don't think I would recommend her.
Dr. Jha has helped me to get my life back on track. I was falling behind in school, work, and in life. Dr. Jha helped me to understand why I was failing, gave me the medication to help me focus, and after a month I was doing much better and feeling much better. My functionality, productivity, and even my sociability have improved dramatically. I highly recommend Dr. Jha.
I was seen at the time the appointment was scheduled to begin (note: I arrived a little early). The doctor took the time to listen, wrote extensive notes, was fully engaged and took significant time to help with referral. She showed real concern for my care even when it was unlikely to benefit her practice.
