About Dr. Astrud Leyva

Dr. Leyva returned to her home town, Houston, TX, after spending almost 6 years practicing Rheumatology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. She attended Houston Baptist University for her undergraduate studies then pursued her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. She then completed her Internal Medicine residency program and served for an additional year as a chief medical resident and Assistant Professor of Medicine at UTMB. Following this, she underwent her Rheumatology fellowship program at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. She worked as a rheumatologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Temple, TX for 3 years prior to moving to Virginia. She also completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with University of Texas – Dallas while working full-time. Dr. Leyva enjoys the diagnostic challenges and complexity presented by rheumatic diseases and values the long-term, collaborative relationships formed with her patients. She also has an interest in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology and has obtained her RhMSUS Certification with the American College of Rheumatology. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her husband and kitties, and is glad to be close to her immediate family members in the Houston-area again.
