Dr. Mir is great. He listens and advises on treatment in a way that leaves me feeling informed, but he also allows me to have a say in my treatment. I appreciate that he listens to all of my concerns, explains my options, and explains why other options are not viable for me.

Very friendly and compassionate. He is also very accommodating to scheduling. He has great bedside manner as he takes the tine to speak with me and to go over everything in detail. I injured my ankle pretty badly and healing quickly was very critical for me. He was able to get me into surgery right away and we were able to start my recovery. I am very appreciative of him and his help.

New York Rheumatologists

A rheumatologist specializes in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, which includes those affecting the joints, muscles and bones. Musculoskeletal disorders can cause stiffness, swelling and deformity. Apart from musculoskeletal conditions, rheumatologists also treat autoimmune diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. However, these diseases can also affect the rest of the body including eyes, internal organs and the nervous system.

Rheumatologist complete four years of medical school and earn either a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. After this, they go through three years of residency training in internal medicine or pediatrics. The residency is followed by a two- to three-year fellowship to gain expertise in autoimmune and musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Osteoarthritis - This is a disease that affects the entire joint, which includes cartilage, ligaments and bone.

When should you visit a rheumatologist?

It is common to experience joint and muscle pain every now and then. However, if the pain persists, it may be time to visit a doctor. Musculoskeletal disorders usually have prominent signs and symptoms: Muscular pains/aches, joint swelling, stiffness, redness around joints and fatigue are some of the common indicators of a rheumatoid disorder. Seeking early treatment can help manage and treat conditions before the damage becomes irreversible. Physical therapy and medications are the main treatment methods. If you are not sure about visiting a rheumatologist, you can visit a primary care doctor and they will refer you to a specialist if needed.
