Her education includes a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Frontier Nursing University, a Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Regis College, a Master's in Family Health Nursing from Walden University, and a Bachelor's degree from Grand Canyon University. Dr. Usry also spent 13 months as a medical provider in a correctional setting, where she gained eye-opening experience. She observed that many individuals in the correctional system have psychiatric conditions that are often untreated due to stigma or nonadherence stemming from fear that others might discover their mental health issues. There was a dire need for mental health providers in this environment, and she was able to develop therapeutic relationships in some very challenging situations. This experience inspired Dr. Usry to specialize in psychiatry to encourage, promote, and empower individuals to engage in their mental health care. Ultimately, her goal is to help people gain control over their behaviors and their lives.
