Getting to know Dr. Benjamin Metelits

A native Phoenician, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona before earning my Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine. My rigorous medical education included direct instruction from some of the most world-renowned experts in Psychiatry, with opportunities to serve patients in NYC's oldest, highly acclaimed Psychiatric Emergency Center at Bellevue Hospital. In addition to completing my Residency in Psychiatry at the University of Colorado, I pursued an Internal Medicine internship at Mayo Clinic Arizona. These foundations have allowed me to strategically target interventions at the complex interplay between mental health and physical health (mind/body). At the University of Colorado Hospital, I worked extensively in a state-of-the-art program, the Center for Dependency Addiction and Rehabilitation (CeDAR), which fueled my passion for treating chemical and behavioral addictions. I also received unique, one-on-one faculty mentorship within Denver's Psychoanalytic Institute, which helped me develop my psychodynamic psychotherapy orientation. My engagement in the Denver VA PTSD Residential Rehabilitation Program allowed me to participate in the recovery of combat veterans within a collaborative multidisciplinary treatment team. This unique experience inspired me to pursue a leadership position as Chief Resident and seek employment at the Phoenix VA. Over the last decade, I've been treating high-risk veterans with complex psychiatric and medical comorbidities, fiercely advocating for their wellbeing within General Mental Health. I've treated conditions ranging from mild situational and relationship stressors and grief to anxiety disorders, including OCD, substance abuse, anxiety, complex PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, and severe treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am compassionate, sensitive, intuitive, friendly, warm and approachable. I am passionate about what I do and genuinely curious about understanding each individual person from a genetic, biologic, psychological, social, and spiritual approach. I am also very creative and frequently think "outside-the-box" in my approach to both convention and unconventional treatment plans. Form an alliance with me, and I will also be your fiercest ally and advocate if you are open to my help.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I typically conduct a very thorough, comprehensive evaluation so I can learn as much about you as possible in order to design a highly individualized, effective treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. Whether you are interested in medication management, genetic testing, medical workup and/or consultation with other medical specialists or your current therapist, or pursuing a course of traditional individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, or even psychedelic psychotherapy, we can design a treatment plan that works best for you.

Great listener. Puts you at ease. Was my first time seeking mental health care and really did a great job listening to my concerns and being available.
I have been receiving care from Dr. Metelits for several years. He has been very attentive and provided guidance on several alternatives to medication while providing excellent insight on current therapies and medications that would benefit my symptoms. I would recommend him to anyone searching for a qualified and experienced provider.
Dr. Metelits is clearly the best Psychiatrist I have ever had in 50 years of going to a Psychiatrist. He listens and is empathetic. And though he is an MD and can prescribe necessary medications for your conditions he spends time to get to know and understand what you are going through or dealing with. In this way he goes beyond most Psychiatrists by offering psychological therapeutic concepts. You will not find another Psychiatrist like Dr. Metelits.
Dr. Metelits is fantastic! He is not a typical psychiatrist in that he doesn't just push medication in your face. He is genuinely interested in and concerned about your mental health and associated symptoms. He takes time to listen to you and will discuss all available options, benefits, and downsides of various treatment options. When I first began seeing Dr. Metelits I felt hope for a better future immediately because he took the time to listen to me. He is highly approachable, genuine, and absolutely cares about your individual wellbeing. He values my input and will take it into consideration when we discuss adjusting, changing, or discontinuing any medication. He's not motivated by money from the big pharmaceutical companies, but rather is motivated by helping you feel better and live your best life. Dr. Metelits is truly amazing and compassionate. I am living a much better, happier, and healthier life thanks to him. I can't recommend him enough. Highly highly recommend!
Dr. Metelits has been my psychiatrist for over eight years. Prior to meeting with Dr. Metelits, I had met with and was treated by countless psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health counselors/therapists. Dealing with post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia and life in general is tough. Equally as daunting is finding a doctor that will actually take the time to listen to what you are saying. I feel like the psychiatrist I met with in the past were in a rush to prescribe a host of medications that had me walking around like a zombie forgetting why it was I sought treatment in the first place. Dr. Metelits is not only my psychiatrist, he is a confidant, an ear to listen without passing judgement, a friend. Thank you Dr. Metelits
Dr. Metelits has been my trusted physician for over a decade to guide me through the ups and downs with genuine care and expertise. His commitment to my well-being has made a profound difference in my life, and I highly recommend his practice to anyone seeking compassionate and knowledgeable care.
Dr. Metelits has been assisting with my mental health for a few years now. From day one He listened and addressed my concerns. He gave me options for a successful treatment plan. He has made my treatment feel personal, and always remembers important parts of our past conversation. I highly recommend his service.
Dr. Metelits is an excellent psychiatric provider. He is extremely knowledgeable and thorough. He made me feel very comfortable while talking through some of my issues. He was highly recommended and I’m glad I finally made this leap of faith to get the help I need.
