Getting to know Dr. Benjamin Williamson

All appointments are video appointments at this time. Dr. Williamson is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist whose areas of focus include the medical treatment of severe depression and anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed his Psychiatry residency at Wayne State University, where he trained at the Detroit Medical Center. In his work with patients, Dr. Williamson takes a special interest in the mind-body connection and emphasizes the importance of physical health for mental well-being. He is vigilant in investigating potential co-morbid medical problems that could exacerbate psychiatric symptoms. For example, depression, poor concentration, anxiousness, poor sleep, fatigue, and low energy are non-specific symptoms that may be associated with both major depressive disorder and obstructive sleep apnea. He believes it is of paramount importance to screen for co-morbid physical disease states that can worsen psychiatric symptoms. Dr. Williamson sees his role as that of expert consultant. He wants his patients to be fully informed about their treatment options and, especially, the risks associated with available treatments. Each patient has unique values and goals for treatment, and he strives to empower them to make the best decision for themselves. Having treated patients with severe and complicated forms of depression, he has seen the limitations of pharmacotherapies. Sometimes patients do not respond well, even to multiple medications at high doses. Medications, even when effective, can cause troublesome side effects. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has proven effective for many people and is not associated with the side effects that sometimes limit medication use. Moreover, there is promising clinical research supporting the use of TMS in treating psychiatric conditions beyond depression.

Dr. Williamson was kind, empathetic, and a great listener. He asked precise questions to get a full inventory of my psychiatric history, and my answers clearly informed his treatment plan. I felt safe and heard, and he seemed genuinely excited to work together. I highly recommend him.

Incredible experience! Office staff is friendly, helpful, and very kind- being my first psychiatric appointment, they helped ease any nerves prior to meeting Dr Williamson. The check-in process, filling out forms, future appointments-is all so easy through the office's Patient Portal. Dr. Williamson is wonderful, patient, kind, great listener.. so glad I found him!

Great doc. Really listens

I have had terrible experience with psychiatrists in the past. Like real terrible. One even asked “Okay so which medication would you like to take? Lexapro, Zoloft or Prozac?” Like what..who asks a patient what they want to take! So given my past experience I have been quite hopeless in finding a solid psych doc but let me tell you what, Dr. Williamson is something else! He not only knows his stuff but genuinely takes his time to hear your story and figure out a treatment plan that is best for you. I’m beyond excited to have him in my corner. Highly recommend to anyone who is in the market for a new psychiatrist. Thank you for restoring my faith in your field????
