Dr. Borhan Darmal, MD, is a psychiatrist board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a chapter of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Dr. Darmal was raised in Hawaii and received his undergraduate degree from San Diego State University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from St. George's University School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at LewisGale Medical Center in Southwest Virginia, where he developed an interest in incorporating spirituality into the biopsychosocial model.
Dr. Darmal aims to provide patients with the highest level of care and educate them by sharing his depth of knowledge. He focuses on building a therapeutic alliance with patients, with the goal of reducing medication burden while improving overall health through alternative and holistic means when appropriate.
He has been learning about psychiatry and brain imaging from his father, a long-term psychiatrist at a brain imaging clinic, for over 15 years. He was also directly trained by Dr. Amen while previously working at the Amen Clinic, a brain imaging center for psychiatric patients.
Dr. Darmal has no specific niche and enjoys working with patients with various diagnoses, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD, eating disorders, schizophrenic spectrum disorders, substance use disorders, and mood disorders. Regardless of diagnosis, he believes people are too complex to fit into simplistic diagnostic checklists.
He is also interested in emerging fields such as sports psychiatry and nutritional psychiatry. In his free time, he enjoys podcasts, sports, and art.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I am a physician who is passionate about providing excellent psychiatric care and continuously study my field. . I take a brain health approach along with establishing a strong therapeutic alliance and connection with my patients. I am against the excessive/inappropriate use of medications. I previously worked at the amen clinic and can refer patients for SPECT brain imaging and review their results with them if they wish.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Before your appointment, I would review your intake documents and patient history so I have a good understanding of you and your difficulties. During our appointment I would focus on the details, course and development of your primary concerns. I would ask about other medical, physical, and psychiatric symptoms to rule out other diagnoses. I will alway do my best to spend a good amount of time educating you on alternatives, risks, benefits of various treatment options, whether prescription, altnerative or complementary. If a referral is needed , I will do my best to refer patients to the best care possible.
