Getting to know Brenda Zalewski

Brenda is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) who provides thoughtful, comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management for children, adolescents, and adults. She specializes in treating anxiety disorders, ADHD, depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Brenda takes an evidence-based yet highly individualized approach to care, recognizing that no two patients are the same. She partners closely with patients to develop treatment plans that are realistic, collaborative, and aligned with their personal goals—not just symptom checklists. Patients often appreciate Brenda’s calm, compassionate style and her ability to explain diagnoses and medications in a clear, approachable way. She prioritizes creating a safe, non-judgmental space where patients feel genuinely heard, respected, and empowered in their treatment. Brenda is especially attentive to medication tolerability, life stressors, and the emotional impact of mental health conditions, helping patients feel supported at every stage of care. Her goal is not only symptom relief, but long-term stability, functioning, and quality of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

What I want new clients to know is that working with me is meant to feel safe, collaborative, and human, not rushed, not judgmental, and not one-size-fits-all. I see psychiatry as a partnership. You are the expert on your lived experience; my role is to help you make sense of what’s happening, offer medical and clinical guidance, and walk alongside you as we figure out what actually helps. I take time to really listen, not just to symptoms, but to context: your history, stressors, strengths, relationships, and goals. Medication is a tool, not a requirement. We’ll talk honestly about risks, benefits, alternatives, and how medications fit (or don’t fit) into your life. I’m thoughtful and conservative with prescribing, and I care a lot about side effects, long-term impact, and how you feel in your body, not just on a checklist. You don’t need to “perform” or have things perfectly organized when you come in. It’s okay to be overwhelmed, unsure, emotional, skeptical, or even frustrated with the mental health system. My style is warm, straightforward, and grounded. I’ll explain the why behind recommendations and welcome questions or pushback. Most importantly, my goal is for you to leave appointments feeling understood, respected, and more supported than when you arrived. Healing isn’t linear, and you don’t have to do it alone.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When we first meet, I take time to really get to know you. We’ll talk through your goals, past treatments, and what has or hasn’t worked before. My goal in the initial visit is to make sure you feel heard and to develop a clear, thoughtful understanding of what’s going on. From there, we create a treatment plan together. If medication is part of the plan, I explain the options, expected benefits, possible side effects, and alternatives so you can make informed decisions. I tend to be thoughtful and measured with medications, starting conservatively when possible and adjusting based on how you respond, not just on guidelines. Follow-up visits focus on how you’re actually feeling in real life: mood, sleep, anxiety, focus, relationships, and daily functioning. We adjust the plan as needed, always with collaboration and transparency. I also strongly value therapy and lifestyle supports, and I’m happy to coordinate care or offer guidance in those areas. Overall, my approach is collaborative, practical, and patient-centered. I want you to feel supported, informed, and confident in your care. If something isn’t working, we reassess and problem-solve together.
