“My session with Cate was terrific! She is gifted in her knowledge of what nutrients I was missing and how to easily incorporate them into my diet. Her style reminds me of one of those brilliant teachers who make an intricate subject fun, interesting and easy to learn. She was able to shift my view ever so slightly so that I was able to see so much more than I had been. I came away with not a strict regimen, another diet to try for a week or two, or mandates for how to eat. What I gained is a true understanding of what my body needs to stay healthy and keep my high cholesterol in check. I am now empowered with her knowledge to create meals that truly take care of me. ”

About Dr. Cate Ward

Deciphering the latest nutrition news can be both overwhelming and frustrating. I’m here to simplify the nutrition space and help you understand the latest research. I work with both businesses as a nutrition consultant and individuals as a dietitian. I earned my PhD in Metabolic Biology from UC Berkeley, where I conducted nutrition research, learned to critically evaluate nutrition studies, and taught an array of nutrition science courses. I completed my dietetic training at UCSF, where I counseled patients with a variety of needs, ranging from weight loss to critical care to eating disorder recovery. As a cyclist, yogi, hiker, and active woman in general, I am also passionate about sports nutrition and fueling your body for optimal performance, muscle health, and proper recovery. I combine my expertise as a scientist, dietitian, and teacher to educate and help you navigate through the muddy nutrition space. Eating healthy isn’t something that should occupy your mental space more than it needs to; you have more important things to think about. I’m here to help you properly fuel those passions, whether it be your career, spending more active time with your friends and family, or your studies. With this, you can take back the mental space and questioning around your diet and feel better in your body with more balanced nutrition choices. I understand being tight on time and can help you balance healthy eating with your busy schedule (without spending 4 hours on Sunday meal prepping…unless you genuinely enjoy this). Food is something that is so personal to all of us, and should contribute to, not complicate, our lives. I am all about balance and love an ice cream cone on a hot summer day as much as my favorite Sweetgreen (or really Souvla, if you live in SF, you understand I hope) salad. I love cooking, however, don’t love spending hours in the kitchen, so am a fan of simple and healthful recipes that are quick and easy. I can direct you to some of my favorites based on your preferences, as well as help create balanced meals/days of eating with your favorite recipes. As a scientist, I enjoy keeping up with the latest nutrition research studies and as a teacher, enjoy communicating this information to my clients through discussions during our appointments. I aim to help you understand the “why” behind my recommendations so you are empowered to make your own healthy decisions going forward. Ideally, you shouldn’t need my guidance forever; I’m here to teach you how to make healthy decisions without sacrificing your favorite foods and prepare you to go off on your own knowing how to eat best for your body.

My session with Cate was terrific! Cate is really wonderful all around - kind, warm, non-judgmental, and easy to talk to, on top of a deep knowledge of nutrition and the up-to-date science behind it. With so much information available online, and lot of misinformation, it's helpful to hear Cate's take on my nutrition and the food I buy. I love how Cate can gracefully navigate talking at different levels, from understanding my goals to breaking down the science in a very easy way to understand.
Working with Cate has been a delight! She is so knowledgeable in the science of nutrition but can explain it in a way I can relate to. She has been incredibly helpful in guiding my nutrition strategy for my marathon training all while balancing my crazy work schedule. I even set a personal best in my half-marathon time! What really sold me on Cate is how positive and encouraging she is. I had several crazy work weeks where I went completely off our nutrition plan! But with her advice, I was able to get back on track so I could still train and work without sacrificing my nutrition. 10/10 she is excellent!
I loved that Cate was so informative, but also that everything was able to be so personalized to me and my pregnancy. She actually took the time to compare my prenatal vitamins and the ingredients in them and give me info on what I may be missing and how I can supplement those things. With the doctor I often forget to ask questions and only have an appointment once a month, so it was helpful to have all aspects of my health and nutrition during pregnancy discussed with me and helped me think of questions while going through the thorough information presented by Cate. I also loved that she took the time to discuss my current diet during pregnancy and my lifestyle and gave me ideas based on my own needs and struggles trying to cook while feeling sick and having a toddler running around. So helpful!
