For more than 25 years, Charles Lebowitz, MD, FACP, has been a practicing Primary Care and Internal Medicine Physician in the Tampa, FL area. Dr. Lebowitz earned his medical degree from Universita degli Studi di Torino Scuola di Medicina. He completed both his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at New York Downtown Hospital. He is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Throughout his career, Dr. Lebowitz has held numerous hospital positions, including Chief of Staff and Director of Intensive Care Units at central Florida hospitals. He is currently on staff at Advent Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

Not happy. Will not give me a refill on any of my meds. Have to go many times just to complete a physical. So unhappy. Now I can’t get a refill on my thyroid med.because my insurance is familiar with refills. Never experienced such discomfort from a Dr like this before

I had several visits with Dr. Lebowitz. He made me go in for several follow ups but when I showed up he would forget why I was there. I’m here because you made me come in. I have been on a prescription with the same dosage for several months now. It works for me. This is a prescription for a chronic condition I will have to be on forever probably. He was still making me come in once a month. I asked why and the nurse/receptionist said that was his policy. I could understand having a follow up every 6 months but going in once a month for this prescription like this is excessive. Seems he just wants to be able to bill me/my insurance once a month.
On a different note this is also a weight loss clinic he runs. I saw various graphics on different papers or pamphlets promoting a 1200 calorie diet. I don’t know if that’s what Dr. Lebowitz advises or if this is just items he gets from other places and has around. But 1200 calories is not enough food for an adult whether or not they are trying to lose weight and it’s concerning that a medical professional would even have that misleading information around. What if someone with an eating disorder was in there? Or a teenager who already has body image issues. I really only started coming here because it was the easiest and quickest way to get an appointment but I will be in search of a new doctor now. I wish more doctors in Tampa used Zocdoc.

Needed an annual physical. Selected Dr Lebowitz due to good reviews and advertising as a Primary Care doctor. Worst physical I've ever had. Didn't really do anything other than bill my insurance.
The sign at the front advertises lasers and weight loss. I've never seen that at a primary care doctor before.
No one in the waiting room, obviously no other appointments going on. If you have an acute issue requiring a quick prescription - like a sinus infection or something - this might be a good place to go.
The physician's assistant took my weight, blood pressure, and pulse.
She verified I was just looking for a physical, which I confirmed, and also said I had two specific questions to ask. She said "well that would be extra. That's not part of an annual physical." Great, whatever, I'll talk to the doc and figure it out.
The Doctor came in just a couple of minutes later. He did chat with me about those items, so that was good. (To be clear, he didn't bill extra for that, but he shouldn't have to begin with.) He glanced very quickly in my ears, listened to my breathing with his stethoscope, then asked if I wanted blood work. (Yeah, don't we always do that at an annual physical?) I said "yes, everything that is covered by insurance." He said he didn't know what is covered by insurance, that's up to me to figure out, then proceeded to propose a few labs.
I left with the lab orders. The whole thing took 10 minutes tops and I didn't feel like the doctor did anything at all. It wasn't like any physical I've ever gotten.
When I got home, I called my insurance to verify the labs would be covered. The first thing the insurance person said when I recounted the story was "wow, that's surprising, because the healthcare reform act has very specific requirements about what insurance has to cover. The doctor should know that."
I spent half an hour on the phone with insurance verifying what is covered, and ultimately it boiled down to whether the doctors office would code the labs correctly. I left them a voicemail asking for a call back so that I could discuss it with them, but they never returned the call. As a result, I never got the lab work done. Now I can't get another physical for a year and I feel like I didn't even get one this go round.
I really felt like this doctor is just on ZocDoc to try to fill in the free spots of his schedule with something that he can easily bill insurance providers on. In this case, it took the doctor 10 minutes and maybe the physician's assistant / receptionist (who appeared to be the only other employee) another 20 minutes of paperwork. Thirty minutes of work for a decent check from the insurance company.
