Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
MA
Chidinma Onyegwu, DNP,FNP-C,PMHNP-BC As a psychiatric nurse practitioner who embraces patient-centered and holistic care, my approach to mental healthcare is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and comprehensive understanding. I strive to create a safe, respectful, and empowering environment where each patient feels heard and supported. Theoretical Approaches I Commonly Use: Biopsychosocial Model. This model forms the foundation of my clinical thinking. I assess how biological vulnerabilities, psychological traits, and social environments interact to influence mental health. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Principles. While I’m not a therapist, I often use CBT-based tools and language in brief interventions during medication management sessions to help patients recognize and reframe distorted thinking. Motivational Interviewing (MI) I use MI to enhance patient engagement and autonomy, particularly when addressing behavior change, medication adherence, or substance use. Humanistic and Person-Centered Approaches My practice is rooted in unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness. I believe that healing happens in the context of a trusting relationship. Psychodynamic Concepts When appropriate, I draw on psychodynamic understanding, such as defense mechanisms, transference, and early childhood experiences, to help explore deeper emotional patterns. Strengths-Based and Recovery-Oriented Care I focus on each patient’s inherent strengths and their capacity for growth. This aligns with a recovery model that emphasizes hope, empowerment, and meaningful life goals. I typically work with a diverse population of adolescents and adults facing a wide range of mental health challenges. I have extensive experience treating mood disorders (such as depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, ADHD, PTSD, and trauma-related conditions. I'm also comfortable managing co-occurring substance use disorders and addressing complex cases.
