Getting to know Dr. Christina Persaud
Dr. Christina Lakshmi Persaud is a native New Yorker, born in Manhattan and raised in Queens. She graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior and a Master’s in Public Health. She went on to earn a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences from Tufts Medical University and received her M.D. from SUNY Upstate Medical University. She completed her psychiatry residency at Boston University Medical Center, serving as chief resident in her final year.
As the first doctor in her family, Dr. Persaud realized her dream of helping fellow New Yorkers as an attending psychiatrist. Telemedicine has allowed her to expand that dream, offering care to patients across multiple states.
Her clinical interests include ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, PTSD, psychiatric effects of medical conditions (psychosomatic medicine), academic and professional stress, and navigating cultural dynamics. She incorporates therapy techniques, medical knowledge, cultural awareness, humility, and humor into her sessions. As a doctor of color, she takes pride in providing high-quality care and a safe space for everyone, especially those seeking mental health care for the first time and struggling with internalized stigma.
Dr. Persaud embraced telepsychiatry during the COVID-19 pandemic after being diagnosed with COVID in March 2020. Living with long COVID, she found telemedicine to be a lifeline for herself and her patients:
“To keep working, I got into telemedicine. It’s been a godsend to me and the people I’ve been working with.”
As part of her recovery, she took up long-distance powerwalking and completed the 2021 NYC Marathon. She also enjoys comedy shows, reading, kayaking, live music, Broadway, and rooting for her local NYC sports teams. A passionate traveler, she’s visited over 70 countries and reached her seventh continent—Antarctica—in December 2024.

Unfortunately, I found Dr. Persaud's bedside manner to be extremely awkward and offputting. She did not address my concerns and made no attempts to make a plan to do so at future appointments either.

Went very well/ dr. Persaud listened to everything and was so attentive to things I am severely struggling with. She is very friendly and great at communicating back and treated me so well. I felt that going forward I will have a good connecting with her.

While I liked the doctor, I cannot recommend the practice she works with (Skypiatrist). Dealing with billing was a major hassle and they charged my card on file the full amount even though I verified my insurance is in-network and covers the visit. Fortunately my card had expired but it would have been awful had the charge gone through. Trying to communicate with them after this has been nearly impossible. If you're struggling with your mental health right now, please avoid this practice as I believe whoever is in charge is taking advantage a vulnerable population.
