He spent a year at Stetson University before completing his undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in chemistry, neuroscience, and psychology. He was the recipient of the Walter S. Flory Service Award and the Elton C. Cocke Award for outstanding undergraduate student in biology. He had an early interest in neuroscience and co-authored multiple publications on a variety of topics in the field. After graduation, Dr. Bauer continued his research in neuroscience before enrolling in a combined medical school (M.D.) and graduate school (Ph.D.) program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. While in graduate school, he conducted extensive research in neuropharmacology as part of his doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology. During his medical training, he became focused on neurosurgery. After earning his M.D. and Ph.D., he returned to Florida to complete his residency in neurosurgery at the University of South Florida. Dr. Bauer underwent seven years of training in treating both brain and spine disorders, including elective time spent pursuing advanced training in complex spine surgery. Dr. Bauer believes that all patients are different and should be treated as individuals. This involves personalized plans regarding non-operative and operative interventions. When surgery is necessary, he offers a wide skill set to address patients’ symptoms. Examples of surgical interventions he performs include microdiscectomy, laminectomy, minimally invasive lumbar fusion, open lumbar fusion, anterior cervical fusion, posterior cervical fusion, cervical disc replacement, spinal cord stimulators, deformity correction for scoliosis, and many others.
