Cornelius Chopin, APRN

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
4005 Banister Ln, Austin, TX
Hello, I'm Cornelius Chopin, I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who enjoys educating people towards a happier, healthier life! Educationally, I have obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas, but more relevantly I have my Bachelor’s of Nursing from University of Texas at Tyler and my Master’s of Nursing from Post University. This stark change came from me having a strong desire to want to help people on an individual level. My time in the mental health field began in 2014 as a tech at a residential treatment center for kids and adolescents. After graduating from nursing school, I worked in various mental health nursing roles including that of a house supervisor, charge nurse, admissions nurse, floor nurse, and eventually professor. The settings I’ve worked in include residential, inpatient, partial hospital placement, respite, outpatient, and education. On a personal level I have lived in the Austin area for over 30 years and have been blessed to watch the city grow. I currently live with my wife and two daughters spending most of my free time hanging out with them, volunteering, activities at my church, and watching a good movie or TV series. Outside of work my goal to do things that I enjoy so that I can best serve my clients during the week.

What should a new client know about working with you?

More than anything I want clients to know that my goal is to meet them where they are. I want them to have a sense of control over their own care so that they can not only feel more empowered, but be more empowered to take control over their own health so that they can best adhere to the things that work well for them. I want to be able to help the client create a plan of care that fits into their lifestyle, preferences, and individual life situations. My job is to help educate about the different options that are available to them.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions may occur in my office at Austin Family Mental Health or virtually. A typical process for working with patients always begins with an intake assessment which is approximately 60 - 90 minutes long. I don’t know they client, the client doesn’t know me, so the intake assessment is an opportunity for me to explain how the process works and what to expect moving forward. Similarly, this assessment is for the client to detail their expectations, history, co-morbidities, and current symptom presentation. After those things are done me mutually discuss the next direction that we want to go and work towards that goal. As part of this intake assessment the most important aspect is to establish the provider-client relationship so that there is trust and transparency moving forward. Following intake, further assessments are follow-ups which are used to monitor progress, reassess goals, make changes, if necessary, or continue on the current course of treatment
