Getting to know Dana Ashton
My name is Dana Ashton, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and have advanced practice nursing experience in the psychiatric and behavioral health field, ranging from child and adult inpatient care to community mental health crisis stabilization. I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bowie State University, where I specialized in psychiatric inpatient hospitalization. I received a Master of Science Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health, during which I trained under elite practitioners across various facilities. I also share a passion for business and healthcare administration, and received dual Master's Degrees in Business Administration and Healthcare Administration from the University of Maryland, University College. Currently, I am a Doctoral Nurse Practitioner student at Capella University. My focus is serving clients of all ages across the lifespan in the treatment of mood disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, anxiety, ADHD, addiction, and chronic mental illness. Through psychiatric assessment, medication management, and psychotherapeutic intervention, I also focus on implementing a holistic approach to emotional, spiritual, physical, and social health. I believe in meeting clients and families where they are and creating an individualized plan of care that values client involvement, interprofessional collaboration, and evidence-based practice. My goal for my clients is to feel empowered to treat their illness through supportive education in a stigma-free environment. Most importantly, as a Waldorf, Maryland native, I look forward to serving and giving back to my community's clients.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Whether you are dealing with mood disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, anxiety, ADHD, addiction, or a chronic mental illness, clients working with me can expect to be treated with respect, open communication, and compassionate care through a holistic approach. Clients should know they are in a safe space where they can expect to be heard and to be active participants in the development of their individualized treatment plan. As an experienced provider, I bring advanced clinical knowledge, informed by the latest evidence-based practices across the lifespan, to support the treatment plan. Most importantly, throughout this wellness journey, the client will always feel supported. In addition, should the client need additional support, I have the pleasure of working alongside many skilled and experienced clinicians. I am pleased to collaborate and coordinate care according to the clients’ needs.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
A client can expect their initial visit to include a patient-centered, comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, determination of treatment goals, and education on the diagnosis and available treatment options. When discussing medication management and treatment options, clients will be educated on the medication's purpose, benefits, and possible side effects. Like the initial visit, follow-up visits will focus on open communication and full transparency to track the treatment process, make adjustments as needed, and address questions and concerns. We will address issues as they arise and celebrate treatment goal wins regardless of the size.
