Getting to know Dr. Daniel Wurzelmann

My work primarily focuses on medication management, though I also incorporate therapy when appropriate. My therapy training includes psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), allowing me to tailor treatment to each person’s needs. During my final year of residency at the University of Michigan, I served as one of the chief residents for the psychiatry program. After residency, I worked in Michigan Medicine’s Psychiatric Emergency Services before returning to North Carolina to practice outpatient psychiatry. These experiences gave me exposure to both acute psychiatric care and long-term outpatient treatment. I approach care through a bio-psycho-social framework, seeking to understand how biological, psychological, and social factors interact to shape how someone is functioning. This means we talk about sleep, exercise, substance use, relationships, work stress, and home life—not just symptoms. For those who wish to go deeper, we can also explore how past experiences may be influencing current wellbeing. I treat a broad range of conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and substance use concerns. My goal is to maintain a thoughtful, balanced practice where care remains individualized rather than narrowly focused on any single diagnosis. I am a lifelong learner and remain curious about how advances in technology, particularly artificial intelligence, may shape the future of healthcare. I believe innovation should always be balanced with careful clinical judgment, transparency, and respect for the patient.
