Getting to know Dr. David Abrams

Dr. David J Abrams is an experienced psychologist who has been in private practice for more than 20 years. He received his Doctoral Degree at the Georgia School of Professional Psychology. He then interned at the University of Miami Counseling Center where he developed skills with individual, couples and group therapy. In the clinic, he found great fulfillment working with a culturally diverse young adult population. Dr. David Abrams completed a PostDoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. While there, he gained specialized experience treating adults coping with various physical illnesses along with their familial caregivers. Dr. Abrams also developed and implemented spiritual interventions for patients with substance use disorders and those with chronic physical illnesses within group therapy settings. Dr. Abrams had a volunteer faculty appointment as an assistant professor in Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Miami for several years where he led student seminars and taught Grand Rounds to residents on understanding the links between spiritual/religious factors and patient compliance. To advance his clinical knowledge Dr. Abrams completed a Master’s Degree of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology at Alliant University. He uses his knowledge of psychotropics to educate patients about their medications and to consult with Prescribing Physicians. Combined with his various skills and experience, Dr. Abrams places great value in his efforts to be attentive and empathic to those he is trying to help. He has seen patients improve and grow by knowing that their individual personal narrative is truly heard within a safe therapeutic environment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hopefully, patients who put their trust in me as their psychologist know that I place great value in modeling and teaching them to validate their needs, thoughts and feelings without judgment. I work from a myriad of treatment models that tailors to the need of each individual.. My style is active, direct and focused. Towards the end of each session, I summarize the work, encourage specific behavioral efforts until the next session. and try to end the time with a message of hope. I will confirm a clinical diagnosis yet I believe being a human being is the truest diagnosis for all of us.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions typically start with the patient reviewing some of their progress, struggles, and issues since their last appointment. If the patient does not wish to start , I will remind them about some of issues discussed in the last session and ask them specific questions about what they would like to work on with me on that day. Throughout each session we will discuss specific therapeutic interventions to stabilize symptoms and develop insight related to their specific personal narrative. I will give feedback, observations, and hopefully offer insight into their struggles. We might also develop a behavioral plan for the individual to implement between sessions. Each session ends with a summary, feedback, and encouragement.

Dr. David Abrams, my psychologist, put me back on the road to sanity by identifying my problems, including past traumas, before I could recognize them myself. His intelligence, knowledge, and insight made my time with him the only light in the darkest period of my life. Being a medical professional myself for over 30 years and referring patients to countless therapists I can honestly say that none have ever reached his standards. He is without compare.
During all my sessions with Dr. Abrams, I have felt welcomed, felt supported, and felt a most sincere concern for my thoughts and emotions. Aside from his easily researched clinical knowledge and professional experience, the true test for me has been during those intense moments of therapy when I found him to be a remarkable therapist. He provides a trustworthy environment in which it is easy to share, like with an old friend, times of happiness and times of regrets. With his empathy and insight, he has helped me resolve many issues that have haunted me for perhaps a lifetime. And so without hesitation, I highly recommend Dr. David Abrams.
