He has presented and written peer reviewed papers in prestigious medical journals and is best known for his papers on retinoids. Dr. Elbaum discovered a syndrome, which he named MAUIE Syndrome, that causes fatal skin cancer. He subsequently discovered the gene responsible for MAUIE Syndrome with colleagues from the Human Genetics Research group at University of Basel, Switzerland. In collaboration with USC Dermatology, he clarified a gene that causes brain tumors and multiple basal cell carcinomas. He has made many contributions to scientific literature. Dr. Elbaum is married with 3 sons. He enjoys a multitude of sports, including hiking and tennis. He spends his free time studying genealogy, with a particular interest in onomastics (the study of the history and origin of proper names, especially personal names). He has co-authored academic and peer reviewed papers in genealogy.
