Getting to know Deepa Abhilash
Hi there, I'm Deepa!
Deepa Abhilash, PMHNP, FNP My goal is to advocate for people who are struggling with serious mental illness. I am always looking forward to opportunities to serve, educate and encourage them to be responsible for their mental health. I aspire to help them to be able to function in the community so they can find their purpose in their life.
My approach
I use an integrated approach in the treatment of mental illness which include medication management, motivational interviewing and various therapeutic approaches including cognitive & behavioral , mindfulness , acceptance and commitment .
My focus
I work with children over 12 years old, adolescents , adults and geriatric. My areas of expertise includes substance use disorders, PTSD /trauma, depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, gender dysphoria, ADHD, disruptive mood dysregulation, insomnia, and personality disorders.
My communication style
I prefer to use the assertive communication style where the expressions are clear, honest and respectful . Nonverbal communication including active listening is key in my sessions with my clients. Building a therapeutic relation is very important for building the trust as well as a successful treatment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have earned dual Master's degree from Wilmington University, Delaware. I am a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have diverse experiences as a Nurse practitioner in family medicine as well as mental health. I have over 18 years of experience as a Registered Nurse. I am settled in United States along with my family. I am always a compassionate person who wants to help people . I believe that mental health plays a vital role to move forward in our life. Currently there are many people in our society who is suffering from various mental illnesses. There is such a shortage of providers to help this minority group.
