Getting to know Dr. Diana Kurlyandchik

Hey there, I’m Diana! I am a board-certified psychiatrist based in Connecticut, committed to providing comprehensive care for the full spectrum of mental health conditions, with a focus on anxiety and depressive disorders. I’ve spent over a decade treating individuals with severe and persistent mental illness—and I bring compassion, humanity, and a lot of unfiltered thoughts to my practice. I founded Sunrise Med to create space for more education and lifestyle support during sessions—because long-term wellness comes from more than just meds and therapy. We focus on movement, time outdoors, sleep, and nutrition as key parts of your care, not afterthoughts. As an immigrant and culturally aware clinician, I understand how identity, systemic stressors, and global events shape our emotional lives—and yes, I get it, I’m in it with you! I offer inclusive, affirming care for people from all backgrounds, and my practice is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and anyone navigating the hot mess of humanity!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hi, it’s nice to meet you — I'm Diana! My approach is straightforward, collaborative, a little unfiltered, and focused on what actually helps you feel better. In our first session, I’ll ask about your medical history and current concerns, but since you’ll have already filled out intake paperwork, we won’t spend the whole time rehashing details. Instead, we’ll use that information to dive into what matters most right now. I use a lot of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy tools, so we’ll look at how your thoughts and behaviors affect your mood and practice new patterns, often with small “homework” assignments between sessions. You can also expect to leave each appointment with a clear written summary of what we talked about and a plan for the week, whether that’s trying a new coping skill, tracking sleep, or building in more physical activity. Sessions are real conversations, not checklists, and I encourage you to bring the whole picture — the good, the bad, and the messy. I see clients virtually or in person in Madison, with some evenings and weekends available. I don’t take insurance but provide superbills you can submit for reimbursement, and I use secure systems for telehealth, prescriptions, and payment. If you ever have a true emergency, call 911 or go to the ER, but otherwise you can expect me to respond within two business days. My goal is for you to feel seen, supported, and equipped with practical tools that make a real difference in your day-to-day life! See you soon!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When we first start working together, my goal is for us to figure out if this is a good fit — that little moment when you catch yourself thinking, “aha, the doctor gets me.” That’s what I’m aiming for in our first few sessions, because when there’s real buy-in on both sides, the work flows much better. I’ll review your intake paperwork and ask about your medical history and current concerns, but I won’t spend the whole time rehashing forms — instead we’ll dive into what matters most right now. A typical session blends talk therapy and problem-solving: I use CBT and supportive approaches, so we’ll look at how your thoughts, behaviors, and routines affect your mood, and I’ll usually give you some “homework” to try between sessions. You’ll also leave with a summary of what we talked about and a plan for the week, whether that’s practicing a new coping skill, adjusting sleep, or building in physical activity. If medication is part of your treatment, I’ll walk you through options and make sure they align with your health history and goals. Over time, sessions can be longer therapy visits or shorter medication check-ins, depending on what you need. My aim is always for you to feel understood, supported, and equipped with tools that actually work in your life.

Dr. Diana Kurlyandchik is amazing. She is a kind and compassionate doctor that made me feel seen and understood without any judgment. I can’t say enough good things about her! I recommend her 100%. She is the best of the best.
I can’t say enough about how much Dr. K has helped me. When I first started seeing her, I was struggling with some major mental health challenges and didn’t know where to begin. From the very first appointment, she was patient, understanding, and truly listened — not just to my symptoms, but to my story. Dr. K’s guidance, compassion, and careful approach to treatment have made a tremendous difference in my life. She helped me understand myself better, taught me practical tools for managing my anxiety, and supported me through some difficult challenges I was facing. I’ve always felt respected and heard, never judged or rushed. Thanks to her support, I feel more stable than I have in years. I’m deeply grateful for her care and highly recommend her to anyone seeking a psychiatrist. A++ provider!
Dr. Diana is very helpful. She listens carefully and then offers thoughtful, clear advice that has made all the difference for me.
Dr. Kurlyandchik stands out from other psychiatrists. She's incredibly empathetic and compassionate, approaching her practice with the deep understanding you'd expect from a therapist/psychologist. She's an exceptional listener and provides insightful and constructive feedback, always demonstrating a vast knowledge of her field. Her professional, yet warm approach (complete with a great sense of humor when appropriate??) makes me feel at ease. This allows for, and encourages, a more open and honest dialogue. I truly look forward to our appointments and highly recommend her practice.
I see Diana for medicine adjustments, and holistic health planning. I see a separate therapist for talk therapy. I felt so seen by Diana during our first visit, and every one thereafter. Diana not only asks great questions, but she listens with care, waits, and put us together into action. Her expectations for my life exceed what I thought I could accomplish and feel. Diana, in my experience was not afraid to make changes with support of other structures in my life. Prior to seeing Diana, I had been on the same meds for years which were very safe, but at the expense of my quality of life. Diana and I came to the conclusion rather quickly we should make some adjustments and they have been made thoughtfully and in tandem with the work my therapist and I have been practicing, and the goals Diana and I have set. I’m very excited to work with Diana, and I feel safe and comfortable working with her. She’s inspiring, and working with her gives me a great sense of hope in my /the future.
Dr. D was super patient with me, she was kind and spent more than the allotted time during our session. We didn't have to spend the whole time going over my background, which was great. I was happy to be seen quickly and have a plan right away!
To put context to my checked boxes ("excellent" and "right away"): Dr Diana is smart. Beyond her knowledge of how my/the brain works, she helps me understand what we are doing; and she does it in terms that make sense to me. All of these things are very important to me (and likely any patient). I am her patient; by definition I struggle with some things in life. When I am at my worst, Diana has the patience and takes the time for me to absorb it. This bedside manor is awesome; I could not make progress without it. And I feel that I am making tremendous progress. As for waiting to be seen, I only wait (in the waiting room) because I arrive early. When I'm struggle, getting into session is not a struggle at all. Dr Diana was recommended to me, and feel very fortunate for recommendation. I highly recommend her.
