Getting to know Dr. Don Defrancisco

**Dr. DeFrancisco is NOT IN NETWORK with any insurance plans** Kind and professional care with extensive experience of over 40 years in psychiatry, medicine, psychopharmacology research, and psychoanalytic treatment. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, Irvine, completed my residency in psychiatry there, and hold a PhD from the New Center for Psychoanalysis. My approach is flexible, seeking to understand what can be explained psychologically as well as what is best understood in terms of brain function or chemistry. I have no contracts with any insurance companies. As an out-of-network provider, I mail out a superbill, which patients can submit for reimbursement if they wish.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is based on an in-depth psychological understanding. Sometimes people also want a biological assessment since I am a psychiatrist and medical physician and I do provide this as well, but always in the context of an in-depth psychological understanding of the person. I want to understand your current circumstances including current stressors and support systems. I want to understand your experiences of distress in as much granular detail as you can give. The family and emotional development are important and I want as much history of important attachments as possible. Sometimes family history will shed light on genetic predisposition, which can be of importance in understanding a person's temperament and perhaps biologically given strengths and vulnerabilities.
