About Dr. Don Wilhelmus
Dr. Wilhelmus earned his Doctor of Optometry degree with honors in 1982 from the Illinois College of Optometry. Prior to that, he completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Evansville. He spent his first three years as an optometrist in the United States Navy before moving to the Dallas area in 1985. Dr. Wilhelmus still holds the rank of commander in the United States Navy Reserve. His special interests include contact lenses, primary eye care, children, and low vision. A board-certified optometrist, Dr. Wilhelmus has been involved in Low Vision Therapy for over 35 years. Many eye doctors and blind rehabilitation specialists have trusted him by referring their patients with special vision needs. He is nationally recognized for his work in Low Vision and Blind Rehabilitation. Dr. Wilhelmus is also active in his community through the Chamber of Commerce and the Garland Rotary Club, as well as professional organizations such as the American Optometric Association, Texas Optometric Association, and the Northeast Texas Optometric Association. He and his family reside in Plano.

Dr. Wilhelmus is the best eye doctor I have ever visited! Personable, professional, funny, and "down to earth". Explained the components of the eye and why things happen in the eyes the way they do (floaters, cataracts, detecting diabetes & high blood pressure symptoms in the eye, etc.). When I went in, I was concerned about the number of floaters in my eye. Dr. Wilhelmus showed me the inside of my eye and explained how my eye was heathy and free of any retina detachments. I also got contact lenses during my visit. From the receptionist to the technician who performed all of the eye tests to the last person who took my payment, the whole office was great. Very impressed with the doctor. Was shown back by friendly and professional staff right on time. Staff thoroughly did the vision tests prior to seeing the doctor. He was waiting for me with results immediately. I had no idea that he actually has specialized in a genetic defect causing blindness that runs in my family. Great manner. Never rushed. Addressed all of my concerns and then some. No problem getting a quick appointment even though I was a new patient. Highly recommend.

I had vision issues and went thru 5 other Dr.'s before i found this office with Dr. Don Wilhelmus that was referred by a Friend. My sight issues were addressed taken care of and I'm very Happy with the results.The staff is amazing very Kind, Fun, Friendly and Professional. I have and will continue to refer people to this office. The Entire staff really do listen to their patient's questions, and concerns and always search for the BEST resolution for each person. I Love them all and will NOT go anywhere else.

Dr. Wilhelmus is a class act. From the moment he walks into the exam room, you feel at ease and know you’re in great hands. Throughout our exam, he explained every step, and asked if I had any questions. In addition to his professionalism, Dr. Wilhelmus can hold a great conversation. Dr. Wilhelmus was so nice! He was throuogh and answered all my questions. Even explained what a sigmatism is and how they can come and go as we age. The office staff was nice and I was in and out within 45 min.

Pricing was significantly higher than expected, and the staff tried to push the digital retinal scan before the eye exam, despite the fact that I said upfront I did not want that service. I'm in my 20s and just had one last year, but the lady said "with my issues and given that I'm a new patient I have to have one." I asked her "what issues?" and she quickly retracted, as they hadn't even looked at my eyes yet.
Eye exam went smoothly, and the optometrist was friendly and informative, but everything else rubbed me wrong.

I had worst experience ever with his front office they don't want to make any offert to help the paitant
Second , I didn't see the doctor because the electricity shut down I wait for more than 20 minutes .
I don't recommended this Dr ar till he change his staff .

I have been a patient of DR. Wilhelmus for over 12 years. He is extremely nice and always answers all my questions. You're never rushed and I will continue to go to him. The staff is wonderful too and everyone is knowledgeable and willing to help!
