What should a new client know about working with you?

In the healthcare field, you have a choice of providers. It is important to know whether or not we are both a good fit for each other. My first visit is a consultation visit. One or both of us may decide that you would be better off at a higher level of care, seeing another mental health professional, or that you may not need psychiatric treatment at all. This is ok and expected. I want each new client to feel comfortable knowing that they are not obligated to continue with care or to start treatment if they are not a good fit for my practice.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the initial evaluation, I prioritize developing an understanding of the individual and their lived experience. Given the limited time available to obtain a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, it is necessary to direct the interview to ensure all relevant details required to make an accurate diagnosis and to develop a patient-centered treatment plan are obtained. Arriving at a precise diagnosis is a process that unfolds over time, recognizing the complexity of individuals and their circumstances. It is seldom possible to gain a complete understanding of a patient within a single session. However, with each subsequent visit, and as our therapeutic relationship evolves, I will gain more insight and knowledge about you to support or modify your initial diagnosis. Initially, I may meet with a patient more frequently (e.g., every 2 weeks), depending on the severity of symptoms. Over time, as symptoms improve, I may extend the length between visits. If a patient is doing well, I may see them a minimum of 4 times a year (or every 3 months).
