More about Dr. Elaine Vlasak, OD
After optometry school, Dr Vlasak completed one of the best residencies in the United States at the Baltimore MD Veterans Hospital. Here she received advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated cases of eye disease and trained with world renowned researchers in glaucoma, retina, and cornea. From 1996 to 2005, she served as faculty at the UT Medical School Department of Ophthalmology. In addition to opening Custom Eye Care at The Rim, she is a parttime assistant professor at the UIW School of Optometry.
Dr Vlasak speaks Spanish quite well. She studied Spanish in Guanajuato, Mexico and the prestigious Universidad de Salamanca, Spain.
What kind of name is Vlasak (pronounce VLAH sock)? Dr. Vlasak is a 4th generation descendent of Czechs who migrated to Texas in 1887 . Her father grew up on the west side of San Antonio and later moved to Corpus Christi. His family was so well treated by their Hispanic neighbors that he later became a Lutheran pastor who dedicated his life to serving Hispanic and rural congregations. Her mother’s family were German settlers who have lived in San Antonio since the 1870’s. Her great grandfather started the Jenner Manufacturing Company in 1904, which later became the Judson Candy Company. (You can still see the name of the Jenner Manufacturing Company of the front door of the Judson Candy Lofts downtown.) Dr. Vlasak enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with her family.
