Dr. Elizabeth O'Connell, MD

Psychiatrist
NY
If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or a mood that doesn’t feel like yours anymore, and you want a psychiatrist who speaks plainly and takes you seriously, I’d love to meet you. I came to psychiatry through the emergency department and the delivery room. Before medical school, I spent more than a decade as a registered nurse and certified nurse midwife, including work in a Level 1 trauma center. I’ve sat with people through real crisis, and that steadiness comes with me into every session. I earned my medical degree at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School and am completing my psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai. I work with both men and women, and I have a particular focus on perimenopause and menopause. Many high-performing women in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s are told their anxiety, sleep problems, brain fog, or irritability is “just stress.” Sometimes it is. Often, hormonal shifts are part of the picture. After a career in women’s health, I know how to look at both. My style is plain and direct. I’ll name what I’m seeing without hedging, move at your pace, and treat the parts of your story that don’t fit a neat diagnosis as useful information, not a problem. I draw on CBT and psychodynamic therapy alongside medication management. I’m a strong fit if you want a psychiatrist who connects the dots between your mind, your body, and your life, especially if you’ve spent years managing everyone else’s crises while your own needs waited. I see adults 18 and older and don’t provide crisis care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Here’s how getting started works. 1. Book your first visit here. Within 24 hours, our care coordinator will call you for a short, complimentary fit call. She’ll confirm your goals, schedule, and coverage, and answer your questions. If we’re not the right fit, you can cancel your appointment, and we will point you toward better options. 2. Your first visit is with me. For medication management, it’s a 60-minute psychiatric evaluation. For psychiatric therapy, where you get therapy and medication management from one physician, it’s a 90-minute intake. We’ll cover what’s bringing you in, your history, what you’ve tried, and what you want to be different. If perimenopause or menopause may be involved, we’ll also talk about your cycle, sleep, and physical symptoms. You’ll leave with a clear plan. A note on hormones: I focus on the psychiatric side of perimenopause and menopause and don’t prescribe hormone therapy. I’m glad to coordinate with your OB/GYN or primary care doctor so your care fits together. 3. Ongoing care. Medication follow-ups are 30 minutes, usually monthly. Therapy sessions are 45 minutes, typically weekly. We review what’s changed, what’s working, and what’s getting in the way, and we adjust. Already working with a therapist outside our practice? I’m glad to coordinate with them. I see adults 18 and older by telehealth only, for patients located in New York and Connecticut. I don’t provide crisis or emergency care. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988.

HSA and FSA cards are accepted. Cancellations: 48 hours’ notice is required. Late cancellations and missed appointments are charged the full fee. We don’t offer sliding-scale fees for psychiatry.
