About Dr. Etan Sugarman
Dr. Etan Sugarman is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Hip Arthroscopy, Sports Medicine, and Joint Preservation. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from New York University and his Doctor of Medicine from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine—where he graduated top of his class and was inducted into the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA)—he pursued a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. He also completed advanced training in hip arthroscopy, preservation, and reconstruction with Dr. Benjamin Domb, founder of the American Hip Institute. After nearly a decade as clinical and educational faculty at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, Dr. Sugarman joined the American Hip Institute.
Dr. Sugarman is the Director of Joint Preservation at the American Hip Institute, the first clinic in the nation dedicated to elite hip treatment. He has extensive experience treating hip, shoulder, and knee disorders, including minimally invasive, reconstructive, and advanced restoration surgeries. He is the inventor of cutting-edge techniques in hip and shoulder and teaches advanced joint preservation methods worldwide.
He has cared for the Los Angeles Rams, Dodgers, Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Sparks, USC football, MLS soccer, and Olympic and elite athletes. An avid surfer, skier, violinist, and former competitive basketball player, Dr. Sugarman understands that each athlete is different. Successful return to sport requires considering not only the injury but the entire athlete—the risk factors for recurrence, timeline, and personal goals. With over 100 publications and presentations and multiple best author awards, Dr. Sugarman is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date, proven treatments.

Dr. Sugarman and his PA Shelby are truly exceptional. Personable, attentive, sensitive, knowledgeable, and pro-active. They listened to my concerns & answered my inquiries with empathy. I was comforted and confident in their abilities when Shelby said, "We believe in treating the patient, not just their symptoms." Dr. Sugarman asked what treatment has been effective to alleviate my pain and agreed to administer an injection of medicine. He used ultrasound to better target the proper point of insertion and I felt no discomfort at all. My previous doctor eyeballed the injection site and on 2 of the 3 occasions inflicted pain.
As a ballet teacher and former professional dancer, I highly recommend Dr. Sugarman & his team.

The only complain is the wait time. I waited for over an hour plus for my appointment. If appointment time is not meant to be kept then there’s no point of scheduling. The doctor’s time is important so is mine.

Dr. Sugarman saw me soon after I got an xray. It was just a long wait time to get an xray as there is only one unit and 5 people were in front of me. He gave me a through examination and answered all questions I had. I highly recommend him.

and I knew of his fantastic credentials. He was Friendly and very Kind to me. After injuring my knee overtraining for the marathon, I went to visit Dr. Sugarman. Getting an appointment was super easy and the experience was terrific. Dr. Sugarman instantly knew what it was ailing my aching knee and was able to diagnose and recommend a course of action and treatment all without any unnecessary x-rays or MRIs. Great bedside manner too and appeared to be very knowledgable and experienced, particularly when it comes to sports injuries. Would highly recommend.
