About Dr. Garrett Leonard
Garrett R. Leonard, MD is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery. He completed a combined neurosurgical and orthopedic spine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. This unique training provides him the insights of both specialties in addressing complex spinal disorders.
Dr. Leonard has experience in treating the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. His special interests include minimally invasive surgery, spinal fusion, artificial disc replacement, revision surgery, disc herniation, stenosis, microsurgery and spinal deformity. He is knowledgeable about technological advances in surgery and uses computer navigation to perform safer and less invasive surgeries.
Dr. Leonard has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters. His research is presented at meetings. He won the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Lateral Access Surgeons

Dr. Leonard is great in the examination room with both his personal style, degree of information provided and availability for appointments both in-person and telehealth via Zoom. The reason why I cannot recommend him is his staff. The nature of his practice is needing to coordinate paperwork with other facilities and doctors, including radiology and other imaging facilities. My experience dealing with Dr.Leonard’s coordinator was TERRIBLE! She did not return calls in a timely fashion and was very rude when I questioned whether an authorization the radiology facility needed to schedule an MRI was actually
faxed (as they did not receive). When you see patients who are necessarily often in a great deal of pain, the last thing you want is nasty attitude from the doctor’s staff. Asking questions and wanting to make sure paperwork gets faxed should not be a bother…..

I’ve this young Doctor/ surgeon for a couple of years now.
In my opinion he’s simply brilliant in his ability to analyze, diagnose and pinpoint exactly the real issue, and…..to follow up the a helpful and constructive treatment.
Initially, I intended to see him for a single visit and maybe a second?
But, now he’s the only Doctor I see for any of my orthopedic related issues.
Absolutely recommended.

Dr. Leonard may have been my best medical appointment visit. His PA was lovely and knowledgeable. Dr. Leonard was professional, kind, courteous, and took the time to explain everything in detail for my back issues. He made me feel fully heard as a patient — truly 10/10 patient care. I have found my NY orthopedist for sure and would not want to see anyone else.
My only feedback was that his receptionist was exceptionally rude. She did not want to check me in and was very unpleasant when I was checking out. She wanted me to schedule a follow up appointment via telephone instead of doing it live with her. She was also quite condescending.

Thankfully, Dr. Leonard and his team were kind, professional, and attentive. They prescribed a course of treatment plus PT, which I followed carefully. The treatment worked, and I’m able to return to work—with the important advice to avoid lifting heavy objects to prevent a flare-up.
