Dr. Matthews holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in political science from Tulane University, where he attended from 1989-1993. At Tulane University, Dr. Matthews maintained a full tuition Dean’s Honors academic scholarship while volunteering his time tutoring at nearby schools and participating in the African-American Congress at Tulane. Dr. Matthews' Residency rotations included internal medicine, psychiatry - inpatient/outpatient/consults, ER, neurology, VA psychiatry, geriatrics, Child and Adolescent, ECT/TMS, addiction, and research.
In his free time, Dr. Matthews enjoys playing the saxophone, running, and writing. He has been an active member of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association.

I’ve seen Dr.Matthews for many years now and a patient of this practice for a decade. Through major lifetime events; spouse deployments, total career changes, relocations, pandemic, parenthood, you name it. He is always attentive and adaptive to what my ever-changing concerns were.

Awesome and thorough psychiatrist who listens and is attentive to the clients/patients concerns (BEST PART!) also, administrative staff is great, kind, patient, friendly and extremely helpful. Visited quite a few psychs both online and in-person & can genuinely, this is the best location by far!

and has been very helpful and understanding to my changing needs during our visits.

Incredibly thoughtful, caring, and understanding man who really works with you beyond just shilling scripts. By far the best provider I've seen in the last five years (I've tried to work with a few because my insurance has changed and I've moved around). I cried the first time I met with him because he asked me what I thought was the best potential course of treatment for myself - which a care provider has never asked me before.
In person & virtual visits both go smoothly. The office staff is exceptionally caring and compassionate. The office is hard to find so give yourself extra time to get there; I had to reschedule my first appointment because I was too late for my slot. It was on me, though, and my next appointment was excellent and nonjudgmental after I fudged up the first try.

I wouldn’t recommend Dr. Matthews. I only saw Dr. Matthews twice, both were prior to Covid so my appointments were in-person. I can’t claim to know how Dr. Matthews acts/carries himself on a routine basis because I obviously don’t know him in that regard. I can only speak of my personal experience with him regarding patient care. (Prior to seeing Dr. Matthews, I was a longtime previous patient of Dr. Elmer Harden at the same psychiatric practice & unfortunately Dr. Harden had to abruptly retire. I was told by the office staff that I could begin seeing Dr. Matthews.) I was in disbelief after leaving this new patient appointment. He spoke to me as if I was a nuisance. His bedside manner was narcissistic & unwilling to discuss the routine medications that Dr. Harden had me taking for almost 5 years. I’m disappointed that a human being chooses to practice in the mental health field yet but treats the patient so poorly & does the opposite of helping the patient with their mental health.
