Dr. Hande Okan, MD

Psychiatrist
NY
If you are looking for a psychiatrist who understands you without judgment and does not see you as a "robot to be fixed with medications," you are in the right place. You can see me from the comfort of your home, office, or anywhere you choose. I am happy to help you understand yourself better, discover what's best for you at this time, and guide you toward that path. I like to provide long-term therapy and be part of your journey to "yourself." I combine EMDR, ego state therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and other approaches, adding medications as needed. I see my patients first as whole human beings. Through our work together, my patients leave feeling content and complete. I create a respectful, friendly, and non-judgmental environment where patients feel comfortable. I earned my medical degree from Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tip Fakültesi and completed my residency in psychiatry at Maimonides Medical Center. I further specialized with a fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine and Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am very friendly, experienced and knowledgable. I have been a practicing physician for more than 15 years. I love to do therapy for self-discovery, trauma, depression and anxiety. I use medications as needed. I am very accessible and approachable. I love to keep my patients informed at every step of the treatment and encourage them to ask as many questions as they need.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session would be "initial evaluation" and it would last 60-90 min where I ask all sorts of questions to get to know you and to help you understand what you are suffering from. You answer only questions that you feel comfortable with. After initial evaluation, we decide together how to proceed with your treatment. If we decide to continue with just medications, we meet in 2 weeks after we start the medication to make sure side effects are in control and the medication is working. If so, then we continue monthly. Medication follow up sessions last 30 min where we talk about side effects, effects of the medications and we track your symptoms. If we decide to continue with talk therapy, we start meeting weekly and each session lasts 60 min. We delve into the root of the problems and solve them together. I mainly use EMDR and ego state therapy which are amazing. If needed, I combine the two. During talk therapy sessions, we also talk about medications as needed.
