About Dr. James Chen

I strive to help patients return from injury or disability to an active lifestyle, specific sport, or hobby. I perform advanced and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, and ankle. I practice Sports Medicine and General Orthopaedic Surgery including fracture care, joint replacement (knee, shoulder, hip, elbow). My special interest in the knee is ACL reconstruction and meniscus surgery. My special interest in the shoulder is rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilization. I did not feel like I was high priority. I am not an Olympic athlete nor elderly, but someone with a very high level of activity. I would have liked more than 3 mins with him to discuss different avenues andmanage future expectations. He did not give me time to explain secondary ailments as a result of primary injury. I received more time and assurance from medical assistant, who was brilliant.

Although I was impressed by the reception staff, I wasn’t at all impressed with my experience with this doctor. Extremely vague appointment — about 5 minutes max with the doctor & not very communicative. I walked away feeling more confused. My PT & primary doctor have been way more helpful, which feels concerning because they aren’t specialized like this doctor. The only helpful thing about going here was getting the correct knee brace (which ended up breaking within 2 weeks of wearing it).

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. There are easy standard treatments that may have been immediately successful in easing or even eliminating my pain but he chose not to do so without explanation as to why. A shot of cortisone or aspirationmay have done the trick (both treatments that were suggested when insurance denied covering the cost of an MRI) and I wouldn’t still be in pain. Physical therapy may also work but it is much more time consuming and expensive.

MD James is always professional and straight to the point which I like. His PA speaks too quietly and the PA didn't introduce someone who was following him around. Awkward. Front desk person and the one who called me to confirminformation and appointment is a bit unprofessional in manner. Too bad since MD James is awesome.

I am very active so I occasionally get injuries that eventually require medical attention. I have seen Dr. Chen twice, now, in 2 years and I never regret going to him. He and his staff are punctual, polite, knowledgeable, and kind.He always seems to prefer PT to surgery, which is refreshing, considering my interactions with other orthopedic surgeons. The first time I saw him (ankle) he made sure to call me on my cell phone with my test results even though it was later at night and I'm sure he had a long day. Today (shoulder and knee) he again made sure to explore the options and tailor initial treatment for my body's needs. I would recommend his office to the casual athlete any day.

Wait time is long and Dr. Chen seems in a hurry. Doesn't give much instruction or explanation unless I ask. Maybe because my symptoms is not that severe and doesn't need surgery but still.

Dr. Chen is always warm and friendly despite being very busy. Sometime surgeons get a bad rap as having no bedside manner but I always feel comfortable with Dr. Chen (I've seen him for shoulder, knee and foot issues over thelast six years). He is not quick to recommend surgery and recognizes that PT can often be enough of a fix. I wish I didn't need to see an orthopedic surgeon but happy to have him in my corner.

I was 30 minutes early and was seen before my appointment, everyone I saw was very helpful and very speedy. I was given an X-Ray and very clear information about the state of my fracture, instructions on how to proceed withrecovery, and a print out to give to my physical therapist with these same instructions. Overall exactly what I needed with perfect efficiency!

Why the is it so hard to schedule an appointment with this guy? Why won't his staff give you a printed receipt to document a co-pay? I will need an original receipt a documenting my visit for a refund through HSA.I would not recommend this man's office to anyone!

Pros: I really liked that for a surgeon Dr. Chen was NOT quick to recommend surgery. He walked me through my knee MRI images in a very helpful way and suggested that PT and time would be a better treatment optionhere. He also did some quick diagnostics on my shoulder and suggested I try PT and give it some time before going for another MRI. All in all, got what I needed, and in a very quick and efficient manner. Cons: wait time was longer than I expected (~35 minutes). Lots of forms to fill out but I arrived with time to do them.
