Dr. James Halikas, MD

Psychiatrist
5445 Park Central Ct, Naples, FL
Hello! My office is in Naples, Florida (hardship duty) but I have virtual patients all over. I was a Medical School Professor for 30+ years, at Washington University in St. Louis, Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. There, I was the Director of the Psychiatry training program, as well as the Director of the Addiction Medicine fellowship training program. Author of more than 100 research articles in alcohol and drug dependence issues, including two patents in the treatment of cocaine craving, and two patents on novel nootropic peptides, my cocaine treatment advances led to a profile in People Magazine, testimony before congress, consultations with several mayors, and a series of articles in the Washington Post. After retiring from the snow, we relocated to Naples and began a private practice. Here, I have been seeing patients for 25+ years. I've developed an understanding of the Lifelong Consequences of A.D.D., Attention Deficit Disorder, in all its subtle variations, beyond simply hyperactivity or distractibility. For example, it is clear to me that some people are slower in hearing-to-comprehending, Delayed Auditory Processing, even though the psychiatric field hasn't yet apprecioted it. So, I am actively treating ADD in adults of all ages. I also have been treating people with addictions, and adolescents and adults with all sorts of psychiatric problems in my practice. I have come to appreciate that psychiatric illness affects the entire family, so I encourage partner visits. As a senior psychopharmacologist, I am comfortable with all drug catagories, including those that other psychiatrists fear: benzodiazepines (Xanax, clonapin, valium, ativan, etc.), and opiate treatment. In that regard, I accept patients who are in need of medical pain management. My one drawback is that I do not accept any form of insurance. But, as a patient once told me, and I've adapted, " I fix people, That's what I do best." I look forward to meeting you.
