James Perabo, LMFT

James Perabo, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
IL
Jim Perabo, LMFT – Individual Therapy This practice provides outpatient, individual psychotherapy for adults in Illinois via secure telehealth. The practice focuses on thoughtful, structured work for people navigating stress, trauma, life transitions, and patterns that no longer fit the life they are living. The practice is centered on helping patients clarify what is happening, understand how past experiences continue to shape present reactions, and make changes that are realistic and sustainable. Care is deliberate, contained, and grounded in clinical judgment rather than quick fixes or surface strategies. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, the practice takes a systemic perspective while working exclusively with individuals—considering relationships, work environments, family history, and broader life context to support clearer judgment and more intentional decision-making. Treatment commonly addresses anxiety, trauma and PTSD, substance use concerns, and major life transitions. The work draws from trauma-informed care, narrative approaches, cognitive methods, and depth-oriented perspectives, applied flexibly based on the needs of the individual rather than adherence to a single technique. Initial sessions are used to clarify what brings a patient in now, what they want to be different, and what has already been tried. Expectations, boundaries, and goals are set early to keep treatment focused and contained. Services are provided via secure telehealth. Evening appointments are available. New patients are welcome.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is steady, structured, and thoughtful. Therapy is collaborative, but it is also intentional and goal-directed. From the start, we focus on understanding what is happening now, how past experiences may still be shaping the present, and what kind of change is realistic to work toward. I pay close attention to patterns—how stress, trauma, responsibility, and long-standing dynamics show up in thinking, emotions, and relationships. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I’m trained to think systemically even while working one-on-one. That means we consider context: relationships, work environments, family history, and the pressures of daily life. Sessions move at a deliberate pace. We slow things down enough to think clearly, without getting stuck, and move toward action without rushing. Insight matters, but it is always connected to how you live, decide, and respond outside of sessions. I work comfortably with both focused concerns—such as a specific stressor or transition—and deeper, longer-standing issues, including trauma and substance-use-related patterns. Treatment draws from trauma-informed care, narrative and cognitive approaches, and depth-oriented perspectives, used flexibly rather than as a rigid protocol. You can expect a calm, grounded environment focused on clarity, sound judgment, and steady progress—not quick fixes.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The work begins with a focused conversation about what brings you in now and what you would like to be different as a result of therapy. We look at what feels most pressing, what you have already tried, and what feels realistic to work on together. Early sessions focus on establishing goals, expectations, and boundaries so the work remains contained and purposeful. I pay close attention to patterns—how stress, trauma, relationships, work demands, and past experiences may be influencing the present. Sessions are structured but collaborative. We spend time understanding what is happening beneath the surface while also identifying practical ways to apply insight in daily life. The pace allows for reflection without getting stuck and for movement without rushing. Over time, the work may involve examining long-standing dynamics, strengthening emotional regulation, and making more intentional choices in how you respond to situations and relationships. The aim is clarity, sound judgment, and change that holds up outside the therapy room. Sessions are conversational, grounded, and oriented toward steady, sustainable progress.
