About Dr. James Richards
Dr. Richards earned his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and his medical degree from UCLA. Extending his training, he had the honor of a summer internship with Travis Windsor, M.D. who was a pioneer in electrocardiography (EKG technology). He then completed a 3 year residency in Internal medicine in the UCLA/VA program. His emphasis in preventive medicine and health promotion is in keeping with our practice philosophy.
Growing up in the Southern California area, Dr. Richards knew he wanted to practice here and give back to his local community. As a young boy he went to the movies at the Loyola theater which was our office from 1987 until just recently.
He is well known for his warm personality, caring attitude, and the gift of making patients feel at ease. His ability to explain complicated medical issues using clear and simple terms better enables patients to more effectively partner in decisions about their health.

My experience with Dr. Richards today was truly off the charts. I’ve seen multiple doctors over the years, and by far, he is the best physician I’ve ever encountered. I know it was only our first meeting, but if you know, you know.He made sure to clearly explain all the information I needed to understand, taking his time to go over each prescribed medication as well as alternative options that could support my physical health. He is extremely knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and genuinely pleasant.The staff was also polite, kind, and very professional, which made the entire experience even better. I’ve already referred Dr. Richards to my colleagues and shared my positive experience from today.

Disturbing Experience Rooted in Racial Bias and Body Shaming. Went to this doctor for my annual exam in May — he was a new provider for me. As a Black woman, I was stunned by his racial bias and body-shaming. He told me, “I hope you have diabetes” after hearing my dad had it. When I asked why, he said it’s “better” because meds are covered by insurance. Who says that?! And why would you say that. Literally my response in real time.
He also looked at my eyes and said I had low vitamin D — labs later came back totally normal. The assumptions, judgment, and overall tone were unacceptable. The caucasity was real. I won’t be back, and I don’t recommend him to anyone who wants respectful care.

I just left my first visit with Dr. Richards. It was by far my favorite, most thorough appointment with a PCP. He spent more time with me than a doctor ever has during on a regular checkup. He was thoughtful and engaged. I plan on being back as often as I need.

I received exceptional attention from Dr. Richard's staff and Dr. Richard's himself. Professional, courteous, empathetic, thorough communication, friendly, efficient are several qualities of his practice. I learned so much more after my visit than prior to arriving. Dr. Richards educated me numerous topics both medical and technology - fascinating!
Dr. Richards took his time in obtaining a complete picture of my health. It was so convenient that there was a phlebotomist in office, and urgent care services on site. He even "offered" to forward lab results to my OB/Gyn to keep her informed of my medical profile.
I highly recommend Dr. Richards for your medical needs. Thank you, Dr. Richards for helping me feel someone is advocating for me.

It was my first time seeing Dr. Richard’s. He was very nice, super knowledgeable and patient with all my questions. He gave thoughtful and thorough answers.
