Getting to know Dr. Jen Schafer

Hello and welcome to my profile! I received my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University in 2005, and I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Illinois. I enjoy working with patients to foster personal growth and help them feel more empowered to overcome life struggles. Our goal in working together is to help you gain insight for the future so you can lead a more fulfilling life. My clinical interests and experience include working with eating and body image struggles, trauma, fertility/pregnancy, and relationship issues, but I also have experience with life transitions, depression, and anxiety. Coping with trying to navigate relationships, life events, and your own inner self can be difficult. Together, as a team, we will focus on manifesting that change and explore how to make those changes through new ways of feeling and thinking. I view therapy like tending to a garden. We all have times when we feel withered and have not been tending enough to our own needs and relationships. We lose touch with ourselves and/or others, lacking the nourishment and support we need to flourish. Therapy is about picking the weeds out, feeding the soul, and invigorating your growth to become a healthier being. It is not easy to ask for help or to take the first step toward seeking a more fulfilling and happier life. My goal as a therapist is to harness that courage and work toward a better understanding of yourself and cultivate strategies to lead a more integrated life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first few sessions will be about working to develop a collaborative, trusting therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to explore life's greatest challenges. We will do this by learning more about what is troubling you and take time to learn about your current and past experiences. Every person is unique and so the goals and process of therapy will be different for everyone. Once, we develop those goals then we can create a treatment plan and process that works best for you. It is imperative that we work together as a team and that this is a space that you feel safe and supported in as talking about struggles is not easy.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
