Getting to know Dr. Jennifer Yager

I am Dr. Jennifer Yager, a board-certified psychiatrist and diplomate of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. I earned my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed my residency in Psychiatry at Albany Medical Center. My practice has included outpatient, inpatient, consultation liaison, and emergency care, with over a decade of clinical experience treating various behavioral health conditions. My interest in Lifestyle Medicine grew from a desire to empower myself and others to take steps toward improved health using internal tools alongside standard medical treatments, such as medications. I am qualified to prescribe medications, order lab tests as needed, and recommend lifestyle modifications to help you achieve improved health and well-being. The six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine are Whole Food, Plant-Based Nutrition, Physical Activity, Stress Management, Avoidance of Risky Substances, Restorative Sleep, and Social Connection. I aim to work with you as an individual, compassionately gathering as much relevant information as possible, to set treatment goals together, which we will track over time.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is to treat you with compassion, taking your individual needs into consideration while working with you to formulate a treatment plan. I will ask you to fill out some forms to facilitate that process. My therapy style is Psychodynamic, which relies on listening more than talking and then providing therapeutic interventions or feedback when appropriate. The goal is to help you get to the root of your concerns with my guidance. I can prescribe medications and offer advice about lifestyle modification when applicable.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I will ask you to fill out some forms to gather basic information. Then, we will meet initially for 60 minutes to gather more details. I will offer a diagnostic formulation and recommend treatment options and/or request further information, such as bloodwork or medical records if needed.
