Getting to know Dr. Joan Bourne

Joan Bourne, DNP, PMHNP-BC, is a doctorally prepared Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to supporting the mental health of children, teens, and young adults. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Maryville University College of Health Professions-Myrtle E. and Earl E. Walker Hall. With over 15 years as a master's-level social worker and 5 years as a crisis counselor, she brings a wealth of experience in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and patient advocacy. Before opening her private practice, Joan worked at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where she led the Behavioral Emergency Response Team for two years, ensuring rapid and compassionate care for children in acute distress. Her background shapes a holistic, inclusive, and patient-empowering approach, fostering a safe and affirming space where young individuals feel heard, respected, and supported. Outside of her practice, Joan enjoys spending time with her family, exploring nature, and reading, all of which help her maintain a balanced and empathetic perspective in her work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that mental health care should be inclusive, compassionate, and collaborative. My goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where children, teens, and young adults feel heard, respected, and empowered in their mental health journey. I take a holistic approach to care, considering each client’s unique needs, strengths, and circumstances when developing treatment plans. With a background in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care, I understand the importance of meeting clients where they are and working together to find solutions that align with their personal goals. Whether it’s through therapy, medication management, or a combination of both, I strive to provide individualized care that fosters growth, healing, and resilience. My practice is centered on openness, education, and empowerment, and I encourage clients to take an active role in their treatment. Mental health is a journey, and I am here to support, guide, and advocate for you every step of the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to working with clients is collaborative, patient-centered, and individualized to meet each person’s unique needs. 1. Initial Evaluation: Our first session is focused on getting to know you. We’ll discuss your concerns, medical and mental health history, lifestyle, and goals for treatment. This is a safe space for open conversation, and I encourage you to share as much as you feel comfortable. 2. Personalized Treatment Plan: Based on our discussion, we’ll develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include therapy, medication management, or a combination of both, depending on what’s best for you. My goal is to provide evidence-based care that aligns with your values and personal journey. 3. Ongoing Support & Adjustments: Mental health care is a process, and I work closely with clients to monitor progress, make adjustments, and provide continued support. Follow-up appointments allow us to check in, assess treatment effectiveness, and make any necessary modifications. 4. Empowerment & Education: I believe in educating and empowering my clients so they can take an active role in their care. Whether it’s understanding medications, exploring coping strategies, or setting achievable goals, I am here to guide and support you every step of the way. Above all, I strive to make my practice a safe, inclusive, and affirming space where clients feel respected, understood, and empowered in their mental health journey.

My journey in finding the care my son needed was incredibly challenging. I had such a hard time trying to find a doctor for my son. She called and asked me what I was looking for during our visit. After explaining my concerns and the mistreatment my son had been subjected to at his school, she showed extreme sympathy, understanding, and concern. She prioritized my son’s needs, while others had completely ignored him and failed to provide him with the help he required. She was fantastic in interacting with my son and making my husband, daughter, and me feel at ease during the appointment, which can be quite stressful. Her genuine care extended to taking extra time to provide us with answers we had been seeking for a long time. This doctor’s unwavering dedication and profound professional impact on our family have been truly remarkable. I am confident that my son is on the right path to healing and growth with her by his side. I wouldn’t have found such a perfect match without this app.

Dr. Bourne was extremely helpful, kind, and caring. She listened to my concerns and asked thorough questions to determine what treatment she thought was best for me, and provided a comfortable atmosphere and a safe judgment-free space to discuss uncomfortable subjects.

If I were speaking to a friend, I would say, "Girl, Dr. Joan has been precisely what my daughter needed." We had an appointment three weeks ago, and my daughter has significantly improved! She was suffering for 3 weeks with severe depression. She could not get out of the bed. She is now able to attend class, clean her room, do the dishes, and, most importantly, speak with me. I have never seen her smile so bright. She struggled in school and has just completed this semester with passing grades. As a parent, it was exhausting, but I did not give up. My daughter's siblings asked me what was going on; she is actually talking to us. Praise the Lord! Her father has finally relaxed, and we are enjoying the fact that Dr. Joan provided her with the correct medication. Dr. Joan is culturally sensitive, patient, parent-child interaction focused, knowledgeable, compassionate, comforting, nonjudgmental, collaborative, and patient-centered. Thank you, God, for this beautiful woman. Life is Great!!!

I can not speak enough positive things about Joan. She did wonders for my boys and helped hem overcome so much turmoil that they endured. Because of her my boys are happy, healthy and mentally strong. No other provider has come close to the care she provides. Hands down the most kind caring person to work with.
Dr. Bourne created a safe space where my teen felt comfortable opening up. I highly recommend Dr. Bourne to any parent that has teen that is struggling.
