“I had a great experience during my visit with this psychiatrist. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain things in a clear, thoughtful way that made everything make sense. He didn’t just rush through the appointment—he really listened and helped me understand why my current psychiatrist might have me on certain medications, and how some of those issues could actually be addressed directly instead of just managed with meds. he also explained how some of my meds could be causing my symptoms which having a medical background makes sense. it was refreshing to have a provider say this and actually want the patient to feel better and not just add medications. What I appreciated most was how easy he was to talk to. He was genuinely kind, patient, and made me feel comfortable opening up. It felt like he really cared about helping me get to the root of things, not just treating symptoms. Overall, he’s one of the best psychiatrists I’ve met—smart, compassionate, and thorough.”

Getting to know John Thagard

Hi, my name is John and I'm a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner serving clients in Massachusetts. I specialize in PTSD/Trauma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, bipolar disorder, life transitions, and OCD. I’ve been in nursing for 10 years and completed my psychiatric training at University of New Hampshire. I’m passionate about destigmatizing mental healthcare, and together with my colleagues at Lavender Psychiatry, I’m on a mission to create a world where feelings are felt, respected and cared for.

What should a new client know about working with you?

PLEASE NOTE, I’M IN-NETWORK WITH CIGNA, HARVARD PILGRM/TUFT POINT32, OXFORD, MEDICARE, AND UNITED HEALTHCARE. I DO NOT ACCEPT MEDICAID. My therapeutic style is characterized by warmth, engagement, and a genuine personal connection. I believe in establishing a strong, collaborative relationship with each client, where we work together to make informed decisions about their treatment. My practice is inclusive and welcoming, embracing diversity in culture, background, and experience. I have worked with a wide range of clients, including students, parents, professionals from various fields, skilled tradespeople, service industry workers, retail employees, entrepreneurs, artists, and technology experts.I am committed to providing a safe and supportive space where each individual feels heard, understood, and empowered to achieve their therapeutic goals. I chose psychiatry after years of working as a paramedic and emergency room nurse.I felt that many of the emergencies I was seeing could have been prevented, had quality mental health care that encompassed the clients complex multi-faceted needs had been available.i try to provide that care and work with clients to minimize medication use. Starting treatment can be a scary and intimidating process, I’ve successfully treated many people who are new to psychiatric care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Booking Process: Request your appointment time on Zocdoc. My office will email you an online intake form to ensure I’m able to help you. If we’re a fit, we’ll reach out to confirm an appointment time. I try my best to keep slots available each week for new clients. Your First Visit: The initial session is a comprehensive, one-hour evaluation which allows me to understand your current symptoms and difficulties, and learn about important aspects of your past psychiatric, medical, social, educational, and family histories. At the end of the session, we’ll determine the best treatment course. Session frequency ranges from weekly to monthly depending on the type of treatment you’re looking for. If you’re already seeing a therapist, I’m happy to collaborate with them while guiding the medication aspect of your treatment. However, many of my clients see me for both therapy and medication management. My practice, Lavender Psychiatry, is founded and fueled by board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners who create therapeutic journeys that are kind, convenient and transparent so that people can flourish. We have a fantastic team that works together to ensure our clients are well taken care of. This includes our care concierge team who is available 7 days a week between your appointments, to help answer questions and assist with any issues regarding coverage and prescriptions etc. We also have covering providers in case I’m away and an urgent matter arises. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in your journey to a brighter future!
