Getting to know Dr. Jonathan Rapps

Are intrusive thoughts, compulsions, mental rituals, reassurance seeking, or constant doubt taking over your life? OCD can be exhausting, whether it looks like excessive checking, contamination fears, “just right” feelings, unwanted thoughts, or rituals that other people never see. Many people with OCD spend years feeling misunderstood or wondering why they cannot simply “let it go.” Effective, evidence-based treatment can help. I am a board-certified psychiatrist with particular expertise in the evaluation and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I also treat ADHD, anxiety disorders, and depression when they occur alongside OCD or as primary concerns. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive psychotherapy for children, teens, and adults. I have offices on Long Island, New York, and in Teaneck, New Jersey, and also offer telehealth appointments for patients located in New York, New Jersey, Florida, California, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. My approach to OCD is collaborative and evidence based. I take an ERP-informed approach to medication management and enjoy working closely with therapists to ensure that medication and psychotherapy complement one another. Whether you are already participating in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) or looking to begin treatment, I believe the best outcomes come from thoughtful coordination of care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe psychiatric medication should be prescribed thoughtfully and conservatively, recommending it only when there is a clear clinical indication or when therapy alone has not provided sufficient relief. Rather than simply prescribing medication, I take the time to understand each person’s symptoms, goals, and concerns so we can develop an individualized treatment plan together. Patients often describe my style as calm, down-to-earth, compassionate, and easy to talk to. Above all, I strive to build relationships rooted in trust, helping patients feel understood while gaining freedom from OCD and reconnecting with the parts of life that matter most. If you’re considering starting care, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to determine whether we might be a good fit.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial evaluation focuses on understanding your symptoms, history, goals, strengths, and prior treatment experiences. We then review the diagnosis and treatment options together. Follow-up visits assess progress, side effects, functioning, and whether the treatment plan should be adjusted.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Rapps for some time. I found him to be very knowledgeable in his field. He was attentive and very helpful with addressing my specific concerns. He was personable and responded to my questions in a timely manner. I highly recommend Dr. Rapps.
Dr. Rapps is an exceptional doctor. He’s incredibly smart, knowledgeable, and attentive. He listens carefully, never rushes, and always makes sure you’re comfortable with your treatment. He doesn’t push medication - instead, he checks how you’re feeling and makes thoughtful adjustments. When I had headaches from my meds, he suggested drinking more water - a simple tip that made a big difference. As an older college student, I appreciate that he checks how treatment affects my daily life and studies. He also listens to personal concerns with empathy, never judgment. That’s what I mean by outstanding bedside manner - he treats you like a whole person, not just a patient. Dr. Rapps is also great with communication. He sends email reminders and calls if you miss an appointment, showing he really cares. I’m grateful for his care and highly recommend him.
