Getting to know Joseph (Joe) Maxwell

I accept Colorado Medicaid EXCEPT for the Denver Health Medicaid or Kaiser Medicaid plans. If you carry Denver Health Medicaid or Kaiser Medicaid, please do not book an appointment. ***BENZODIAZEPINE*** If you are currently prescribed a benzodiazepine, please note that our clinic's policy is to offer a taper plan with the goal of discontinuing benzodiazepine use. This approach is due to the potential negative side effects and risks associated with long-term benzodiazepine use, including dependency, tolerance, cognitive impairment, and other health concerns. My approach to care is comprehensive, patient-centered, and rooted in both traditional and holistic practices. I believe in treating the whole person—addressing mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health to support lasting wellness. I take a conservative approach to psychopharmacology and strongly believe in collaborative care, working closely with primary psychotherapists to ensure a balanced and effective treatment plan. I also integrate complementary and alternative medicine, lifestyle modifications, exercise, nutrition, and stress management strategies into my practice. My clinical experience spans a range of settings, including acute and non-acute inpatient units, substance use detox and residential programs, and a county correctional facility. I specialize in treating chronic mental illness, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders across all age groups.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Expect a supportive, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment where their unique needs and experiences are respected. I prioritize open communication, shared decision-making, and a holistic view of mental health that goes beyond symptoms to understand the whole person. I take a thoughtful, conservative approach to medication management and often work in partnership with therapists to ensure well-rounded care. I believe in building a strong therapeutic alliance, and I encourage active involvement from clients in shaping their treatment plans. Whether you're new to mental health care or continuing your journey, I aim to create a space where you feel heard, empowered, and supported every step of the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I conduct thorough assessments and apply evidence-based practices to uncover and address the root causes of mental health symptoms. I recognize and honor each client’s individuality, taking the time to genuinely understand your personal story. My goal is to offer compassionate, comprehensive care that supports you at every step of your mental health journey.

Dr. Joe Maxwell is great! He takes the time to listen and understand you as a person. He asks your opinion with any treatment plans for yourself. He explains medications and diagnoses in layman's terms so you aren't left confused after your appointment. 10/10 would recommend

Maybe people want different things in a psychiatrist, but to me, empathy is really important. Dr. Maxwell asked about family history of disease and I said my dad just got diagnosed with cancer and in response he said “ok, got it” as if he was a mechanic and I told him my check engine light was on. And as we went into my psychiatric history, I vulnerably opened up about having repressed traumatic memories of sexual abuse. Instead of offering even a moment of empathy around how incredibly hard and painful and confusing that must be to deal with, he started lecturing me on what trauma is and how he can’t diagnose me unless he knows the exact cause of my trauma. When I asked if I could give him a piece of feedback he said that he didn’t think that would be constructive. He seems highly knowledgeable about the DSM disorders and the pharmacology of psych meds, but he didn’t make me feel very seen, respected, or supported.

Assumed there was nothing wrong with me, and judgmental. It's ridiculous how hard it is to find good mental health help. I hung up because of his annoying assumptions

Booked an appt literally the night before the date set, and was accepted right away. 10/10 for convenience and 10/10 for the experience — had a very thorough conversation of the issues and symptoms I’ve been experiencing, and he was a great listener, help, and really took account of my feelings and concerns. He also worked with me in developing a plan to help navigate my issues and I finally feel seen and heard!
